Action Against Hunger USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network. As an independent NGO, Action Against Hunger USA currently manages operations in 8 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia and Haiti. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $100 million in programs, and approximately 1,800 permanent staff based in New York City, Washington D.C, Nairobi, and country offices. Additional growth is anticipated.

  1. Summary of position

Action Against Hunger – Somalia is seeking an experienced Communication Manager to oversee and monitor communication activities across various projects. The primary responsibilities of this role include implementing the communication strategy and enhancing the organization’s brand. The Communication Manager will also be responsible for coordinating internal communication efforts throughout the organization and managing external relations with the government, donors, and other key stakeholders. The successful candidate will be expected to travel to different project locations to document success stories and create documentaries, while actively engaging with the media to increase visibility and effectively share our work with the communities we serve in Somalia.

Purpose

The Communication Manager is expected to ensure that all projects receive sufficient communication support and contribute to execution visibility and reporting efforts. They will track the successful execution of campaigns across various thematic areas. The purpose of this position is also to lead and coordinate communication with the program team, partners, and stakeholders at local, national, regional, and international levels. The incumbent will also support the advocacy component to increase the visibility of Action Against Hunger and its donors.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing communication materials such as infographics, posters, factsheets, etc., outlining our organization’s capacity and programming for external engagements.
  • Write and oversee the crafting of success stories, feature stories, news releases, and selected reports.
  • Produce posters, signs, displays, and media campaigns to effectively convey key messages.
  • Generate engaging content for social media channels and manage their effective use.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive communications outreach plan that utilizes relevant channels for the dissemination of project information and results.
  • Identify and work with outside consultants, such as photographers, videographers, and other communications professionals, to meet the goals of the program.
  • Produce Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials while working with program teams from different sectors for use at the project sites in the field.
  • Work on campaigns for key events and thematic days to raise awareness and educate Action Against Hunger audience and the communities we serve.
  • Design and produce factsheets, brochures, and other relevant documents for projects to provide information for stakeholders and the communities we serve.
  • Constantly collect data (photos and videos) to evaluate the status of the project and package them for social media posting.
  • Assist in preparing presentations and other communication materials for internal engagements with program and project development teams.
  • Undertake field trips to gather communication material for external use.
  • Maintain calendars and schedules for events to ensure effective coordination of communication activities.
  1. Physical demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.
  1. Working Conditions, Travel and Environment
  • The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required.
  • Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international official matters. While performing the duties of this job in the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high-security risks and outside weather conditions, as well as infectious diseases

Required Skills & Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, political science, or a related field.
  • At least 5-7 years of proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to produce high-quality content for diverse audiences and platforms.
  • Proficiency in design software and tools for creating visual materials.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and experience in managing social media channels.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Having experience working in the humanitarian sector and knowledge of best practices in communications is desirable especially with International NGO’s, UN agencies, line ministries and/or local authorities, in complex emergencies;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be initiative.
  • Self-motivated, result-driven and reliable.
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
