Established in 2011 as a UK based non-profit, the Foundation has since made a strategic shift to directly design and implement its own programmes to ensure greater engagement with communities, better results and increased accountability.

In 2019, in line with its growth strategy, The Pharo Foundation took over the SOS Kindergarten, along with the primary and the Secondary School in Sheikh. The Pharo Kindergarten is located in Gannad area – Koodbuur District and consists of three classrooms for three different learning levels, KG1, KG2 and KG3. The centre hosts more than 138 student.

The Pharo Kindergarten puts equal emphasis on all child development aspects including cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development. To ensure that holistic development is reached, the kindergarten offers the following learning activities; Languages, Mathematics, Religion, Physical Education, Creative Studies, Science and Social Studies.

Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational head office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali).

Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to play a meaningful role in the growth of The Pharo Kindergarten School and the pursuit of its goals

We are looking for an enthusiastic English Kindergarten Teacher whose greatest passion is to see kids learn and grow. Our teachers have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children, creating joy in each child’s life by teaching through play and hands-on activities.

Position: KG English Educator

Location: Hargeisa

Reporting to: The Head Teacher

Contract Type: Fixed Term (one year)

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Plans and prepares a daily structured program using a monthly theme as a planning and teaching method.

Guides and supervises children through the daily program, facilitating a variety of stimulating activities including free-play, structured-play, creative work, outdoor play etc.

Instructs the children in personal cleanliness and hygiene and teaches them how to brush their teeth, wash their hands, etc.

Maintains a positive degree of discipline inside and outside the group room in order to create a safe, secure and appropriate environment for learning. Supervises the children at all times to ensure accidents are avoided.

Promotes a warm, supportive, non-threatening ethos in which the child finds learning enjoyable and stimulating and in which respect and cooperation are emphasized.

Uses creative teaching methods to nurture the children’s interests in learning, e.g. uses drama, puppets, storytelling, singing or art to enhance the learning experience.

Creates a lively, stimulating atmosphere in the classroom, e.g. by decorating the walls with children’s arts and crafts or by establishing a “nature corner”.

Maintains the classroom in a neat and tidy condition in order to create an environment conducive to learning.

Encourages the child to develop a respect for all livings things by conducting nature walks and gardening sessions.

Promotes the use of natural material (sand, water, wool etc.) for discovery-based learning and to develop creativity.

Promotes a creative environment in which children are encouraged to make use of limited resources such as plastic bottles and toilet rolls for craft activities.

Closely observes each child to monitor individual progress. Evaluates each child’s strengths and weaknesses, and plans play sessions accordingly.

Maintains a personal portfolio (scrapbook of achievements) for each child, which traces the child’s development through the kindergarten.

Prepares annual progress reports for each child, assessing the child’s intellectual, social, emotional and physical development.

Actively participates in all Kindergarten meetings and activities such as sports days, cultural activities and plays.

Maintains close contact and relationship with parents to discuss the child’s overall progress and general development.

Participates in all parent-teacher meetings.

Any additional duties and responsibilities assigned by the line manager.

Qualification Requirements:

The ideal person should possess, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in Education and preferably a specialization in English Language or Literature.

A minimum of five years teaching experience in Primary school level education. Play-oriented learning experience.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Strong leadership skills.

The salary and benefits package is competitive and will commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Medical insurance is provided in accordance with The Pharo Kindergarten School’s Health policy.
