Midwife (2 Positions) – Hudur, Somalia

We also run education and health facilities. With the SOS Children’s Village concept, the organization pioneered a family approach to the long-term care of orphaned and abandoned children. SOS Children’s Villages Somalia current works in three regions; Banadir Regions (Heliwa, Wadajir, Dharkenley and Dayninle districts) southwest-state (Baidoa, Elbarde, Barawe, Burhakaba, Bardale, Qansaxdhere and Hudur) Hirshabelle State (Jowhar, Adale & Balcad)
SOS Children’s Villages invites applications from suitably qualified and interested candidates who fulfill the eligibility criterion for the below position.
Position Title: Midwife (2 Pst)
Reports to: Doctor In Charge
Location: Hudur-Bakool-SWS-Somalia
Position Summary:
Midwives are expected to provide advice, care and support for women and their partners and families before, during and after childbirth. They help women make their own decisions about the care and services they access. They care for newborn children, providing health education and parenting support. Midwives are personally responsible for the health of both mother and child and only refer to obstetricians if there are medical complications. They work in multidisciplinary teams in both hospital and, increasingly, community healthcare settings.
Key Role and Responsibilities.
✓ Provide full antenatal and postnatal care consultation, including screening tests and TT vaccine in the clinic, community and at home.
✓ Document pregnant and lactating mothers at MCH.
✓ Identify high-risk pregnancies and making referrals to doctors and other medical specialists.
✓ Conduct health education awareness to the pregnant and lactating mothers visiting the Medical Centre.
✓ Arrange and provide parenting and health education such as complete preparation for childbirth and advice on hygiene and nutrition. For the woman, her partner and family members.
✓ Encourage participation of family members in the birth to support the mother and enhance both mother/baby bonding and family relationships.
✓ Provide counselling and advice before and after screening.
✓ Offer support and reassurance following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death.
✓ Assist mothers in labor and delivery; monitor the condition of the foetus.
✓ Support and give advice on the daily care of the baby, including exclusive and complementary breast feeding, bathing and making up feeds.
✓ Provide advice and guidance on a safe and timely transfer home; liaising with agencies and other health and social care professionals to ensure continuity of care.
✓ Register/document mothers delivered at MCH.
✓ Provides awareness and encourages on birth spacing/family planning services for mothers attending at the MCH and after delivery.
✓ Engage in professional development to meet PREP (post-registration education and practice) requirements.
✓ Administer medication as ordered by the attending doctor.
✓ Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly report.
✓ Maintain overall professionalism, visibility, and confidentiality of patients and organization.
✓ Keeps confidentiality and maintains professionalism, visibility, and integrity.
✓ Follow established health center policies, procedures and objectives; continuous quality improvement initiatives; safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards.
✓ Help to decrease infant mortality rates and preterm birth and take all initiatives which are necessary in case of need and carry out where necessary immediate resuscitation.
✓ Manage complications in pregnancy and childbirth to level of the midwifes, In accordance with the principles of basic emergency obstetric care.
✓ Perform any other duties requested by the Head Nurse or Doctor in Charge.
Child Safeguarding (CS)
• Responsible to raise awareness of the SOS Child Protection Policy principles and to prevent and protect children and young people from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination.
• Ensures strong focus on CS prevention by organizing informal and formal discussions, workshops and other capacity buildings activities for children and young people to make them understand the CS risks and protection mechanisms.
• Responsible for reporting any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately, following Child Safeguarding reporting procedures. CS reports should be made to the CS team at project level and/or to the respective line manager
The Project Assistant will need to demonstrate the following qualifications, experience, skills and competencies:
• Bachelor degree in Midwifery
• Two years’ experience in busy maternity Hospital or MCH.
• Good counselling and communication skills
• Observing client confidentiality and privacy
• Good experience in BEMONC & Familiarity with CEMONC services
• Able to provide Basic Life Support to women and newborns
• Excellent command in Somali/English languages
• Computer skills (Ms word, excel, internet, computer based lab results ordering and reporting)
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Critical thinking
