Position: OTP Nurse:

Over all job purpose:

The OTP nurse will perform day-to-day work of treatment of children with SAM at the sites and Provide early intervention and treatment by ensuring nutrition support through provision of therapeutic food, routine drugs, including health and nutrition education and refer cases that need a referral to health facilities. The OTP nurse is expected to provide a high standard of promoting optimum health and preventive health care, thereby contributing to a safe, efficient, and effective service to patients by following the safest and most effective therapeutic feeding protocol in line with SRCS health policy guidelines and nursing standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Program Implementation

  • Perform daily nursing tasks required in the daily care for children with severe acute malnutrition, which includes administration of drugs, therapeutic feed preparation and monitoring of vital signs
  • Provide health and nutrition education to mothers on hand hygiene, cleanliness, waste disposal and other effective practices relevant for safety and infection prevention
  • Detection of severe acute malnutrition in the community and provision of treatment for those without medical complications with ready-to-use therapeutic foods or other nutrient-dense foods at home.
  • Record properly all screening results and write daily, weekly, monthly reports.
  • To prevent and trace defaulter, s/he will check any absence from OTP attendance to help other nutrition team members in investigating and acting on causes of default and non-response or an increase in deaths.
  • Provide nutritional and medical care with individual counselling on proper nutrition techniques, offering practical advice and education to mothers on the key issues of Infant and Young child feeding practices including the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the initial 6 months of the children.
  • Instruct individuals, families and other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention and childbirth, and develop health improvement programs
  • Monitor all aspects of patient care, including dietary intake, general health improvement and physical activity for reporting.
  • Record and report to the nutrition supervisor any symptoms and changes in the patients’ conditions for decision making.
  • Evaluate healthcare outcomes on SAM cases and prepare individualized reports
  • Raise requisitions for replenishment of drugs, consumable supplies and SAM therapeutic feeds
  • Finally, s/he provides daily, weekly and monthly statistics report to the Head Nurse and/or any one in a position of acquiring that data, making sure that data of the SRCS, beneficiaries and their families is handled confidentially.

Reporting:

Complete and submit to the head nurse the relevant weekly and monthly reports for the OTPs activities.

Check the coherence between the medical stock report and the attendance of OTPs beneficiaries.

Make sure reports are accurate and complete.

Report problems encountered to the OTP in charge nurse.

Operations Management:

Identify capacity-building needs of the OTP team and ensure they are properly trained and well supported to implement programme activities

Participate in emergency preparedness, rapid assessments and emergency responses.

Partnerships/Relationships

Develop and enhance relationships with strategic partners, donors, local authorities and community leaders to maximize support for maternal and child health

Perform other related duties as assigned by the SRSC Senior Management

Educational Qualifications & Professional Training
Education Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery with experience in SAM protocol or equivalent qualifications
Professional Training Leadership and Management
Certification/Licensing Registered Nurse

Language Requirement Demonstrate proficiency in Somali and English languages
Relevant Experience Minimum 2 years relevant experience in the screening and treatment of children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition by following the safest and most effective therapeutic feeding protocol
