Mission and objectives
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board.
The UNV Field Unit in Somalia reports to UNV Regional Office for East and Southern Africa based in Nairobi. In Somalia, UN Volunteers are deployed with both UN Missions (UNSOS, UNSOM) and with UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes. The Missions have a dedicated Support Officer for UN
Volunteers serving there and the UNV Programme Officer mobilizes and supports volunteers with UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes.
Context
The Field Unit mobilizes, oversees, and facilitates the work of a growing number of national and international UN volunteers in Somalia in collaboration with host agencies, funds, programmes and the UN Agencies. The Programme Assistant will support the Field Unit in the daily UNV management including, outreach, volunteerism awareness activities, field visits, UNV recruitment process, support to Host Entities in terms of administration and HR management of UNVs.
Task description
Under the supervision of the UNV Programme Officer, the Programme Assistant will undertake the following tasks:
- Create UNV Description of Assignments in the Unified Volunteer Platform (UVP);
- Support the Field Unit in mobilization activities and the UNV recruitment process by ensuring volunteers have completed all required tasks related to the UNV onboarding and exit in the Unified Volunteering Platform (UVP)
- Prepare briefing packs and arrange orientation/security briefings for new UNVs
- Monitor and keep records of the contractual status in UVP and flag follow-up actions on assignment extensions, renewals, and replacements.
- Support the UNV Field Unit in conducting advocacy and outreach programmes on UNV to expand the national talent pool for both onsite and online volunteers by updating the national talent pool in coordination with Volunteer Services

- Assist in planning and coordinating UNV events such as UNV Townhalls, International Volunteer Day and volunteerism promotion activities. eK3S5RE Dmoe2X
- Liaise with UN Volunteers to contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases etc.
- Maintain inventories of all UNV-supplied, non-expendable equipment, and ensure records of all items purchased for UNV-executed projects are submitted to UNV headquarters.
- Maintain general office files and keep information and reference material in a manner that allows easy reference and retrieval;
- Perform other administrative duties as may be required.

Requirements
Required experience
3 years of experience in interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners such as the UN Agencies,
- Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
- Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment and web-based management systems;
- Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
- Sound security awareness;
Experience with volunteer management or volunteering is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;

Living conditions and remarks
General: Mogadishu is the HQ of UN operations in Somalia. The UN Volunteer will be subject to the overall direction and guidance of the UN Designated Official (DO) for security. The volunteer will be incorporated into all applicable security protocols and will be required to adhere to the guidelines, security plans and other directives issued by the DO. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the insurance plan.
