Job Title: Market and Agribusiness Development Specialist
Location: Somalia
Project: Adaptive Agriculture and Rangeland Rehabilitation (A2R2) Project
Reports to: Project Manager
Employment Type: Full-time
Duration of employment: Up to one year; following successful completion of six-month probationary period; with renewable contract if performance is satisfactory.
About the Project:
The Adaptive Agriculture and Rangeland Rehabilitation (A2R2) Project aims to enhance agricultural productivity and rehabilitate rangelands in Somalia. The project focuses on climate-adaptive agricultural practices and sustainable land management to improve the livelihoods of local communities and ensure food security.
Job Summary:
The Market and Agribusiness Development Specialist will be responsible for identifying market opportunities and promoting agribusiness development to support the project’s objectives. This role involves working closely with farmers, agribusinesses, and other stakeholders to enhance value chains, improve market access, and foster sustainable economic growth in the agricultural sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Market Analysis and Strategy Development:
- Conduct market assessments to identify opportunities for agricultural products and value-added goods.
- Develop strategies to enhance market access for farmers and agribusinesses, including local, national, and international markets.
- Value Chain Development:
- Analyze and strengthen agricultural value chains to increase efficiency and profitability.
- Facilitate linkages between farmers, processors, wholesalers, and retailers to improve coordination and value addition.
- Agribusiness Support:
- Provide technical assistance and business development services to agribusinesses and cooperatives.
- Support the establishment and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agricultural sector.
- Capacity Building:
- Design and deliver training programs on market-oriented farming, agribusiness management, and entrepreneurial skills.
- Enhance the capacity of local institutions and community-based organizations to support agribusiness development.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, private sector actors, and financial institutions to promote agribusiness development.
- Advocate for policies and initiatives that support market development and agribusiness growth.
- Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the impact of market and agribusiness development activities to farmers.
- Prepare regular reports on project progress, market trends, and success stories.
- Resource Mobilization:
- Identify funding opportunities and assist in the preparation of proposals to secure additional resources for market and agribusiness initiatives.
- Manage budgets and ensure the efficient use of resources in line with project goals and donor requirements.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Business Administration, Marketing, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- At least 10 years of experience in market development, agribusiness, or related fields, preferably within a development project context.
- Proven expertise in market analysis, value chain development, and agribusiness support.
- Experience in capacity building and training, with excellent facilitation skills.
- Strong understanding of the agricultural market dynamics and challenges in Somalia.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector actors.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design and implement effective market development strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in English. Knowledge of Somali is an asset.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and work in challenging environments.
