TOR for training of Smallholder farmers on good agriculture practices

  1. Background

Action Aid International Somaliland (AAIS) is part of global federation working to end poverty and injustice with thousands of communities and millions of people across the planet guided by its new strategy ‘Global action to end poverty’ that ensures coherence, aligning with the poor and excluded people, re-asserting women’s rights, strengthening accountability, and building resilience against shocks & hazards.

AAIS want commence training on good agriculture production practices for small holders in Gabiley region. The training will be conducted across 4 communities which are; Diini Goobaale, Magalo Didar, Satiile and Kidiga. In total 200 farmer participants will be attended the training which is 50 farmers from each community. Training on   good agriculture practices is essential to strengthen the knowledge and skills of farmers which helps to acquaint farming skills and will prepare them to increase productivities through adopting and sequencing crop husbandry practices. The training will be more focused on selection of the good crop varieties particularly cereals included sorghum and maize, legumes like cowpea and soybean and vegetable in particular small cash crops tomato, onion and watermelon.

The Good agriculture practices (GAP) training will cover principals to apply for on-farm production and postproduction processes for food production that will improve socioeconomic of the target smallholder farmers while also considering environmental sustainability. Proper utilization of cultivated land as well as conservation of soil under cultivated areas is necessary for dry land farming techniques. Therefore, farmers will be trained/ familiarized for practicing mixed cropping, contouring farming under hills in watershed areas.

In addition, the training will also train farmers on natural resource management which is vital for farm agro-ecology enhancement where the participants will practically involve soil and water conservation measures.

  1. Training objectives:
  • Improve the farmers’ knowledge on good agriculture practices (GAP) and watershed management structures.
  • To improve local food production through knowledge transfer to smallholder farmers
  • To address the current pressing challenges of agriculture production and draw recommendation to farmers
  • To document and share local coping mechanism and adopt climate resilient.
  1. Expected Output

By the end of this training participants will be

  • Enhanced their level of understanding on good Agriculture practices and watershed management.
  • Familiarized on planting pattern / crop spacing, on weed control and storage: mixed cropping, natural pest control
  • Learnt local copying mechanism for soil and water conservation measures for watershed management
  • Enhanced farmers ‘understanding on cooperation and self-help
  • Enable to identify local copying mechanism
  • Demonstrated good agriculture practices of local land races cereals and legumes
  • Understand climate-induced challenges to come up alternative solutions
  1. Training Methodology and Implementation Strategy

Basically, the training will use mixed approaches to accommodate farmers’ who can’t read or write and the methodology is tailored in people with low literacy levels. Storytelling and pictorial demonstration will be availed together with group discussions and practical activities. Before commencing the training, TNA will be done focusing on good agriculture practices for cereal and legumes production, objectives   course design, modules’ curriculum development, preparation and selection of the training materials.

  1. Timeline

Training on good agriculture production practices will take 12 days across the four targeted communities. This means 3-days per community. The trainer will pursue 12-days to frequently visit in the field to facilitate subsequent sessions plus 2 days of reporting. However, the total numbers of days in this exercise is 14 days commencing the 4th July 2021 and ending 19th July excluding the Fridays.

  1. Experience and the Qualification of the Trainer

The trainer should have:

  • Advanced degree in agriculture or any other related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of practical experience in agriculture related training.
  • Experience in both for the practical and theoretical procedures of training.
  • Excellent communication and dissemination skills and fluency in Somali language
  • Adapt of community participatory methodologies and techniques.
  • Above average writing skills to satisfy documentation requirements of training outputs.
  • Villagers friendly presentation where people’s literacy and numeracy skills are very limited.
  • Conduct case stories and sharing practical experiences from participants to incorporate into the final training report.
