Established in 2011 as a UK based non-profit, the Foundation has since made a strategic shift to directly design and implement its own programmes to ensure greater engagement with communities, better results and increased accountability. The Foundation has carried out numerous projects in East Africa, with a focus on Ethiopia, Somaliland and Rwanda. The key themes for the philanthropic side of the Foundation are education, health, water and agriculture. At the end of 2019, the Foundation started its Pharo Ventures franchise to prioritise sectors where the Foundation believes a real impact can be made by establishing self-sustaining businesses, which focus on job creation.

Recognising health as a key aspect of human and economic development, The Pharo Foundation implements programmes that aim at increasing access and quality of health care, focusing on health infrastructure improvement and health professions capacity enhancement.

Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational Head Office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali) with further expansion plans in East Africa.

Position Summary

We are looking for a Medical Officer to apply medical knowledge and skills to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illnesses and to work collaboratively with other professionals across the hospital

Job Title:                          Medical Officer.

Reports To:                      Health Coordinator.

Functional Relationships:    Country Representative (Hargeisa, Somaliland), Director of Health (Nairobi,

Kenya) and Health Team.

Job Location:                   Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Contract:                            Fixed Term (One year with possibility of Extension).

Duties and Responsibilities

To take responsibility for the clinical decision making of the unit on a day to day basis.

To ensure that the nursing team is supported in their clinical activities and are provided with timely, consistent and accurate medical information.

To act as a point of referral for internal and external medical queries.

Responsible for reviewing all high profile cases on a daily basis and proactively managing their care.

To refer cases to appointed Specialist, that are outside their areas of expertise.

To ensure that clinical governance procedure is appropriately complied with and that breaches are reported

To ensure and report adverse outcome in patients

To undertake audit in conjunction with the requirements of the Ministry of Health.

To answer enquiries from patients and underwriters regarding the clinical management of their patients.

Participate in ongoing CMEs in consultation with the chair. Any other duties assigned by the line manager.

Qualification Requirements

A first degree in Medicine.

3 to 5 years’ experience in Medical field.

Advanced knowledge of medical research methodology and ethics. Extensive knowledge of medical recordkeeping practices.

Advanced ability to ensure the highest standards in patient care and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to supervise a team of nurses and other lower cadre medical personnel.

Behavioral Competencies

Ability to be creative and innovative in generating new ideas and undertaking research.

High level of professionalism, work ethics, integrity and data collection analysis and reporting. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

The ability to obtain complex medical information from those whose first language may not be English.

The ability to work as a pivotal member of a team comprising medical and non-medical colleagues. The ability to maintain a compassionate and understanding approach even under pressure.

To be able to make rapid assessments of risk and start treatment, transfer or other remote intervention.

To be able to communicate their decisions and the reasoning behind them to the patient and other parties.

To develop an understanding of the commercial and corporate structures and operations of our clients.

Salary and Benefits

The Salary and benefits package is competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Medical Insurance is provided in accordance with The Pharo Foundation Health Policy.
