INTERNAL & EXTERNAL VACANCY ADVERTISMENT

The Ministry of Health Development, Republic of Somaliland requires the following positions to work in the ITFC, pediatric and measles isolation ward in Las Anod General Hospital; these departments are supported by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) – an international, private, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization. Potential applicants can be external candidates or existing employees of the Las Anod Hospital. Selected candidates would be seconded by MoHD to work in the MSF supported department for specific duration:

Job Title : Nurse Aid – (Based in Lasa nod with possible frequent travel around Sool region)

Number of positions : 4 Four

Level : 3 (on MoHD Seconded Staff daily wages Pay-scale)

Work Location : Las-Anod General Hospital, Sool region, Somaliland.

Start date : Immediately after recruitment process

Length of contract : None contracted – Daily wages position

The selected candidate will be reporting to Medical supervisor (Hierarchically) & Unit supervisor/Medical Supervisor (Functionally).

Main Purpose:

Assist the respective nurse in the day-to-day attending of the patients and ensure clear follow-up on the patients conditions.

Specific Responsibilities and Tasks:

General

Comply with the health and safety rules related to the job for the sites. Respect medical ethics at all times

Nursing Care: working under supervision of nurse

Take and record the vital signs (Temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, level of consciousness, oxygen level, and weight) according to daily schedule, for admissions or at his own initiative, according to the patient’s condition.

To make an oral reports (for all patients), and collaborate with the nurse to write relevant information on the individual cards and in the transmission booklet, for the next team, at the end of the shift.

To examine all the new admission (history and medical examination) in collaboration with the nurse. To monitor the state of the patients and report quickly any abnormality or significant change in the

patient’s condition to the nurse.

Monitor carefully provision of auxiliary treatment e.g. ORS, Oxygen therapy as prescribed. Change urinary bags as specified by the nurse.

Collect urine, faeces samples from patients as required & support Lab responsible on sampling.

To follow strictly the medical prescriptions, (drugs, curatives, vital signs control…), being allow to give oral and SC/IM injections under supervision of nurse in shift. The nurse assistant will not take IV fluids or give IV medication.

To perform under nurse supervision or ER supervisor in charge in the following tasks:

IV fluid
Naso-gastric tube
Urine catheter
Complicated dressings

To confirm with the nurse prior to administering medications for any changes in treatment.

To make all procedures respecting the hygienic rules, utilizing proper technique and to keep all the material clean.

To help in the alimentation of those patient unable to feed themselves and to supervise the rest of the patient in the ward during meals time.

Participate to the surveillance of the patient (vigilance regarding hydration, his health state evolution, identification of emergency situation) and information of the nurse. In case of emergency, help the nurse as she/he requested.

To stimulate emotional and physical activities of the patients. Correctly fill in patient files; record vital signs; findings etc.

Along with nurses assess, follow up and evaluate the condition of all patients and report of progress and problems or deterioration in the patient’s condition.

Assist the nurses during the in-patient rounds.

Inform the patients/caretakers about the treatment and medication given, and ensure that the message is understood.

Collect drugs in the pharmacy, if necessary and when nurse is not available. Prepare the trolley for the medical round with the nurse.

During distribution of the medications prescribed, confirm the following; right patient, right time, right dosage, right drug; right administration route and check the expiry date of the drug.

Apply dressing according to the prescription and to protocol.

In close collaboration with the other assistant nurses and nurses ensure that the ward is never left unattended.

Health education for Patients and Caretakers:

Orientate & give health education to new patients and caretakers to the ward and routines e.g. toilets, visits hours.

Give health education to the patient and caretakers on o Hand-washing

o Use of ORS

o Importance of cleaning of the patient areas. o Disposal of medical waste

Additional Tasks

Be flexible and be able to give assistance with different activities not included in this primary job description.

Requirements:

(Candidates MUST be from the Sool Region, preferable resident in Las Anod town)

Education	Diploma in Nursing from recognized university
Experience	Desirable 2 years experience. Having worked in MSF or other NGO’s and in developing countries is desirable.
Languages	Local language essential. Mission language desirable
