Background Information

Horn International Relief and Development Organization (HIRDO) is a National humanitarian organization working in Somalia since its establishment the year 2004. HIRDO is a non-profit making organization to address and mitigate the effects of conflict, natural and man-made disasters and the socio-economic problems in Somalia. It is an initiative formed to resist prolonged insecurity and droughts in Somalia and the increased lack of humanitarian access and humanitarian services to victims in Somalia.

HIRDO targets vulnerable beneficiaries both in urban and rural areas on life-saving activities through emergency response, recovery, livelihoods, and developmental activities. With regards to the absence of the socio-economic infrastructure and the systems of governance and institutions which led to the collapse of livelihoods and all the basic services of many communities. The organization also focuses on governance projects of peace building and development initiatives. HIRDO since its inception and mutual partnerships with global development and local partners has been able to implement humanitarian protection activities in collaboration with its stakeholders.

Overall Job Purpose

Screeners will be responsible for screening <5 children and pregnant and lactating women for malnutrition, admitting them or discharging when it’s appropriate, following the IMAM guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • S/he will be required to conduct sensitization and MUAC (middle upper arm circumference) screening of Pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and children under 5 years.
  • The nutrition screener will screen, tally, register and coordinate the screening of children to verify their age at the distribution point; the nutrition screener/register additionally is required to train the Nutrition volunteers.
  • S/he will be tasked to report to the nutrition officer on distribution requirement update.
  • The nutrition screener will collaborate with other INGOs/LNGOs on nutrition activities and to refer children identified with SAM and provide technical support to the nutrition assistant.
  • S/he will be required to mainstream the nutritional activities in line with HIRDO standards with regards to Infant and Young Child feeding (IYCF) programs.
  • The nutrition screener will also provide guidance to (IYCF Groups) on policy and methodologies to enhance service delivery at the Host community and camp level.
  • The Nutrition Screener is required to possess significant experience in inter-agency coordination in management of complex field based operations and emergencies, good knowledge of program management and solid experience in technical field of OTP.
  • The nutrition screener is expected to have competencies of a skillful leader in guiding and supporting staff, addressing various operational challenges, along with increasing security concerns.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Diploma in Nurse, Public health, or other related field is required.
  • Experience in the area of nutrition promotion and addressing malnutrition.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the same position.
  • Previous experience in NGOs/Donor funded programs is preferred.
  • Working experience of one year in IMAM or Maternal and Child Health program
  • Excellent written and spoken skills in English and Somali language.
  • Experience in nutrition program and community work.
  • Good capacity and relation to work in a team and flexibility.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), editing, and advocacy skills,
  • Computer literate in (Microsoft word, excel, power point presentation and internet use.)
  • Effective interpersonal skills
