Somaliland Youth Peer Education Network (Somaliland Y-PEER) is youth led organization which promotes reproductive health rights, fights all types of gender-based violence, enhances youth employment opportunities, develops leadership and entrepreneurship of young people in Somaliland. Its main office is in Hargeisa with regional offices in Erigavo and Burao cities of Somaliland.

Position Title:  PEER Educators (2 Positions)

Duty Stations:  Hargeisa

Duration: One year with the possibility of extension

Description of the Position 

Peer Educators will be responsible for conducting life management skills trainings, providing couching, mentorship and counseling sessions to the young people, organizing employment and entrepreneurship trainings and managing Y-PEER resource center. The trainings will focus on IDP camps, marginalized communities and poor neighborhoods.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Peer Educators will be part of Mustaqbaldoon project staff. Following are the key responsibilities under the supervision of the Mustaqbaldoon Project Coordinator.

  • Recruit Vamos trainees in Hargeisa youth IDPs, minority and marginalized communities as well as poor neighborhoods in coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Labor and Employment and Ministry of Education based on the agreed upon criteria for the life management skills trainings.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly training work plans based on the VAMOS training manual.
  • Ensure that all the key information of training participants is recorded and filed properly, both in soft copy and hard copies so that it could be retrieved easily and readily.
  • Conduct pre and post test of trainings, store them in SPSS and produce analyzed report on quarterly basis
  • Deliver VAMOS sessions as per the approved work plans
  • Ensure all VAMOS sessions are interactive by engaging different training methodologies such as storytelling, use of role plays, energizers, use of humor and true-to-life drama to deliver sensitive topics and information.
  • Organize all the logistical issues needed for trainings, meetings, and visits such snacks and training materials
  • Conduct some of the training sessions in a community based venues.
  • Provide couching, counselling and mentorship sessions to the alumni members of trainings and workshops
  • Work a flexible working hour such as mornings, afternoons and evening based on the target group and individual preferences.
  • Invite at least one guest lecturer to training as well as important gatherings like VAMOS annual Alumni meeting.
  • Deliver monthly progress reports including success stories, statistics, photos and follow ups
  • Maintains good and very positive a relationship that fosters trust and understanding with training, counseling and mentorship sessions
  • Participate in meetings with government partners, civil society and private sector initiatives that are linked with the project and mobilize any other key stakeholder for the programme.
  • Provide technical information and insights contributing to the identification of critical factors, gaps and actions necessary for the advancement of trainings, counselling sessions, workshops and other components of the Project.
  • Contribute to knowledge development and management of the trainings, sessions and project activites by recording and documenting all actions and processes taken for each group as well as results and lessons learned during this group.
  • Perform other activities of Y-PEER works where and when requested by the supervisor.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in social work, development studies, business administration, project management or equivalent knowledge in humanitarian and development projects.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ of experience in organizing, facilitating and conducting life management skills trainings or other trainings related to the development of youth in Somaliland.
  • Excellent in monitoring and evaluation, capturing success stories and writing reports
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation skills and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills particularly in Microsoft Office, SPSS and social media
  • Sufficient knowledge of the local context of Hargeisa.
