Action Against Hunger-USA has over $100 million in programs, and approximately 1,800 permanent staff based in New York City, Washington D.C, Nairobi, and country offices. Summary of Position
The auxiliary midwife will provide support to qualified midwives and other healthcare professionals in delivering quality maternal and childcare services. She will assist in antenatal care, labor and delivery, postnatal care, and provide health education to women and families. The auxiliary midwife plays a vital role in promoting safe motherhood, ensuring the well-being of mothers and newborns, and supporting the overall healthcare team.
Purpose
The purpose of the auxiliary midwife role is to assist in providing comprehensive and compassionate maternal and childcare services. She will contribute to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, promoting healthy pregnancies, facilitating safe deliveries, and offering postnatal support and education to women and their families.
Engagement
The auxiliary midwife will engage in various activities to support the provision of maternal and childcare services. They assist in antenatal clinics, monitor maternal and fetal well-being, provide assistance during labor and delivery, conduct postnatal check-ups, offer health education, and collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure holistic care for mothers and babies.
Essential Job Functions
- Antenatal Care: Assist in antenatal clinics, including measuring vital signs, conducting health assessments, and providing health education to pregnant women.
- Labor and Delivery Support: Assist certified midwives during labor and delivery, including monitoring maternal and fetal well-being, providing comfort measures, and assisting with necessary equipment and supplies.
- Postnatal Care: Conduct postnatal check-ups for mothers and newborns, assess their health status, provide breastfeeding support, and offer guidance on newborn care and postpartum recovery.
- Health Education: Deliver health education sessions to women and families on topics such as pregnancy care, nutrition, breastfeeding, family planning, and newborn care.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of antenatal, labor, and postnatal care provided, including vital signs, measurements, assessments, and interventions.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with certified midwives, nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care for women and newborns.
- Support and Emotional Care: Provide emotional support, reassurance, and encouragement to women during their pregnancy, labor, and postnatal period.
- Community Outreach: Participate in community outreach programs, health campaigns, and initiatives aimed at promoting maternal and child health.
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Professional Experience:
- Completion of a certified auxiliary midwifery program or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in providing maternal and child healthcare services in a clinical or community setting.
Required Skills, Competencies & Attributes:
- Knowledge of antenatal, labor, postnatal care, and newborn care practices.
- Familiarity with maternal and child health guidelines and protocols.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide empathetic and supportive care.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation.
- Cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse backgrounds and beliefs.
- Compassionate, caring, and patient-centered approach to care.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics.
- Willingness to stay updated with advancements in maternal and child healthcare.
