BACKGROUND
Volunteers for Relief and Development is a registered local organizations working in humanitarian initiatives to respond to vulnerable communities by protracted droughts and conflicts in hard-to-reach areas of Somalia. The main objective of its establishment is reaching the underserved populations affected climatic shocks, drought and human made disaster. Volunteers for Relief and Development operates in Central and South of Somalia.
JOB SUMMARY
The position is based in Diinsoor and the role of the Qualified ANC Nurse is to provide high-quality antenatal care (ANC) services to pregnant women, ensuring timely and comprehensive maternal health interventions in line with national health protocols and organizational standards. Key functions of this role include providing routine ANC check-ups, identifying and managing pregnancy-related complications, promoting maternal and newborn health, ensuring proper documentation and reporting, and working closely with other health staff to improve service delivery. The ANC Nurse will also be responsible for health education, counselling, and community outreach to encourage early ANC attendance and skilled delivery.
SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Qualified ANC Nurse will undertake a number of duties and responsibilities, including:
- Provide comprehensive antenatal care services according to Ministry of Health (MoH) guidelines.
- Conduct routine ANC check-ups including physical examinations, vital signs monitoring, and laboratory investigations as required.
- Identify and manage high-risk pregnancies and refer cases to higher-level facilities when necessary.
- Provide counselling on nutrition, hygiene, danger signs during pregnancy, family planning, and postnatal care.
- Maintain accurate patient records, ANC registers, and monthly reports.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to relevant supervisors and MoH structures.
- Coordinate with community health workers to promote ANC attendance and facility-based deliveries.
- Administer prescribed medications and supplements such as iron/folic acid according to protocols.
- Support maternal and newborn health outreach activities in collaboration with other team members.
- Ensure infection prevention and control (IPC) measures are followed at all times.
- Participate in health facility meetings, trainings, and supervision visits.
- Work with supply chain teams to ensure availability of ANC-related medicines, equipment, and supplies.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing or Midwifery with valid certification from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in providing maternal health services, particularly ANC, in Somalia or similar contexts.
- Sound knowledge of maternal and newborn health protocols, including ANC guidelines.
- Experience in conducting health education and counselling for pregnant women and their families.
- Ability to work under challenging conditions and in remote locations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong skills in patient assessment, recordkeeping, and reporting.
- Experience working with humanitarian organizations is an added advantage.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
REQUIRED COMPETENCE
- A mature, respectful, and compassionate healthcare professional with high professional discipline and moral integrity.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in Somali and English.
- Demonstrated empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity when working with pregnant women and their families.
- Strong counselling and health education skills, particularly in maternal and newborn health.
- Good organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Competent to work under stress and adapt to emergency situations.
- Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Commitment to confidentiality and adherence to medical ethics.
- Excellent computer skills: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and use of electronic medical records if available.

The responsibilities of this position include regular contact with children, and young people. Volunteers for Relief and Development organization is responsible for protecting and safeguarding the dignity of children, women, and all vulnerable individuals, as well as raising awareness.
