Position Title: Consultant: Guidance and Counselling
Reports to: Education Advisor and Education Program Manager
Contract term: 30 days – over 60 days
Overview
WUSC – World University Service of Canada – is a leading Canadian non-profit organization in international development, committed to providing education, employment and empowerment opportunities that improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged youth around the world. WUSC is working in partnership with Windle International Kenya (WIK) to implement Kenya Education Equity Project to support girls in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps. The Kenya Equity in Education Project (KEEP) aims to support girls in northern Kenya, both in and around the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps. Girls in these areas are considered to be particularly vulnerable and in need have support. Opportunities to access quality education in schools are very limited in these areas and support for girls’ education is very low in the communities relative to that for boys.
Scope of Work
Given the project context, and the extent of girl’s challenges and other barriers, KEEP is providing marginalized girls with access to counselling services for helping them build necessary skills and support for transition. Strengthening counselling is also a critical component of improving resilience and providing girls with of other opportunities in life. Therefore, the consultant will review and assess existing Guidance and Counselling manuals and recommend relevant changes to the manuals, set clear modules to monitor implementation progress and provide ToT training.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and assess existing guidance and counselling manuals that include identifying gaps in the manuals as compared to best practices;
- Mainstream gender into the training manual and design activities that deal with gender equality or transformation;
- Training the KEEP Counsellors on gender and how to implement effective gender sensitive guidance and counseling;
- Develop a detailed Guidance and Counselling strategy and framework for KEEP.
- Based on the produced manual, conduct ToT training session(s) to the target group to explain the manuals produced;
- Provide advisory support services to Counselling and at times Life Skills to ensure that the counselling tools and procedures are functioning, troubleshoot and suggest corrective action during and after the consultancy period;
- Work with WUSC’s MEL team to support development of observation tools for lay and school counsellors.
Deliverables
The Key Deliverables for the consultancy are as follows:
- Revised guidance and counselling training manuals
- Training report
All deliverables to be met within 2 months.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Guidance and Counselling
- At least 5 years’ experience working in Life skills and guidance and counselling programming in the education sector.
- Experience in developing Gender sensitive training manuals
- Strong English communication and writing skills
- Kiswahili language skills or other relevant local language skills are a significant asset.
Functional Competencies
- Expert knowledge of refugee education landscape in Kenya
- Experience in conducting teacher training in guidance and counselling in similar contexts
- Proficiency in use of basic computer software

- Solid understanding of the concepts of gender mainstreaming and equality in the KEEP context (Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps and surrounding host communities). **
