BACKGROUND
Lifeline-Gedo International (LLG) is a Humanitarian, Non-profit and non-governmental Organization dedicated to responding to humanitarian emergences through provision of life-saving support mechanisms in partnership with national and international role players, promoting peace and stability, advocate against all kinds of violence, initiate long term and short-term development projects. Over the past 10 years the LLG has grown, strengthened and diversified its programming strategy, funding and team and now comprises of a cohesive complementary portfolio of emergency response interventions alongside longer-term multi-sector adaptive programming in community resilience to climate- and conflict-induced shocks and stresses, durable solutions (DS) for displacement-affected communities through enhancing sustainable integration of IDPs and host communities, with parallel institutional systems strengthening work in Health and Nutrition sectors which LLG is aiming to expand across all its programme areas.. Today Lifeline Gedo is operational in Jubaland state in Somali across 3 districts which are Belet-Hawa, Bardere and Dolow.

| General Purpose of the Job | Ensure nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients in accordance with doctors’/consultant’s prescriptions, protocols, respect of universal hygiene standards and context. Ensure supervision and training of a team working under him/her e.g. Auxiliary nurses |
Specific Responsibilities and Tasks:
- General Knowledge of LLG and Safety at work:
- Co-operation with the colleagues of own and other departments.
- Is aware of activities of other departments and respect specific rules and procedures.
- Comply with the health and safety rules / instructions of the supervisor for wearing protective gears (if/when applicable) related to the job.
- Ensure all staff working with him/her comply with the health and safety rules / instructions of the supervisor for wearing protective gears (if/where) related to the job.
- Respect medical ethics at all times.
2. Personal management:
- To train and monitor all the cares delivered by the nutrition assistants or auxiliary nurse SC.
- To organize daily work of nutrition assistants or auxiliary nurses in collaboration with the supervisor.
- To make an oral report (for all patients), write relevant information on the individual cards and in the transmission booklet, for the next team, at the end of the shift.
- To inform mothers about the functioning of each nutritional phase and it is rules.
- Respect for the working time by self and others.
- To be committed in the development and organisation of the nutritional program.
- Medical / Nursing care:
- Participate in the medical ward round with the doctor.
- To examine all new admissions (nutritional history and medical examination).
- To contact supervisor in order to inform of new admission and their clinical conditions.
- To monitor the state of the patients and prioritise medical care for the patient in worst clinical conditions.
- To do the physical examination of the children: Heart rate and pulse, oedemas, fever, diarrhoea, dehydration and food intake.
- To inform quickly the doctor on duty in case of problems like vomiting, diarrhoea, and degradation of the status of the patient.
- To follow the medical care according to the phases.
- To ensure proper rehydration of the patients via;
- Daily preparation of ReSoMal.
- To give the amount of ReSoMal as prescribed by medical doctor.
- To explain to the mother the importance of the rehydration.
- To help the mother to give the ReSoMal to her child.
- To inform medical doctor about the evolution of the patient (fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, deterioration, improvement.).
- To fill the rehydration form.
- To follow strictly the medical prescription, (drugs, curatives, vital signs control…).
- To continuously check if there is change in drug prescription and adapt consequently the treatment.
- To deliver the drugs at the right time.
- To check that the patient take all the drugs (not vomiting…) and fill out in his individual card.
- To encourage mothers/caretakers to give water to the patient.
- To make dressing respecting the hygienic rules and keeping all the material clean.
- To check if the patient had received measles vaccine before discharge or transfer to the ATFC/OTP.
- Write the incidences book and do the handover to the next turn.
- Nutritional care:
- To know SC admission /discharge and transfer criteria.
- To prescribe and adapt the quantity of milk according to the phase and weight of the patients.
- To monitor the meals each patient should receive.
- To keep informed on how the patients are eating.
- To encourage and advise the mothers, having difficulties to feed their children.
- To put a naso-gastric tube while respecting the hygienic rules.
- Do daily check of oedema.
- To follow the evolution of nutritional status of the patients.
- To draw the weight curve of each patient and calculate the %.
- To check if the patient accept the OTP, before transfer.
- To decide on discharge/ transfer to OTP in collaboration with the doctor.
- To inform mother where she has to go, when the patient is discharged to OTP and what she must do to continue the nutritional treatment.
- Administration of drugs:
- Read the prescriptions and prepare the necessary drugs.
- Ensure that the appropriate drugs are given to the children.
- Write on the card of the patient, the drug given and the time.
- Write the daily consumption.
- Check at the end of the shift, that all the necessary drugs for the day are available.
- Health education & psychosocial stimulation:
- To participate in health education of the mothers.
- To stimulate emotional and physical activities of the patients.
- Try to keep the children playing.
- Create good relation with the children and the mother:
- Reporting:
- Reports all-important information linked to the functional activities of the department, that should be communicate to the supervisor.
Additional Tasks:
- Be flexible and be able to give assistance with different activities not included in this primary job description.
This job description is subject to amendment depending upon the ongoing requirements of the project.
