Child Protection Officer

TEAM/PROGRAMME: Child protection team LOCATION: Borama
GRADE: 4 POST TYPE: National (5 Months)
Child Safeguarding:

Level 3 – the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people

ROLE PURPOSE:

Under the direct guidance of CP/CRG Coordinator and Borama Field Manager. The Child Protection officer will be responsible for implementation of Child protection activities and closely monitoring of activities to be done

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Functionally Reports to:  Borama Field Manager  – Programmatically to CP/CRG Coordinator

Dimensions: Save the Children works in 18 regions in Somalia/Somaliland with a current staff complement of over 500 staff and current expenditure of approximately USD 100 million each year.

Staff directly reporting to this post: 6 case workers in Borama and Hargeisa Working contacts:

Internal: All staff of SC in Somaliland and other field offices

External: community structures, local Implementing partners and Government authorities.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Program Planning and Implementation

Planning and budgeting for emergency project.

With support from the Coordinator, follow quarterly, monthly and weekly activity plans to achieve expected results. This includes planning of activities, and procurement.

Under the supervision of the Coordinator, ensure that all planned activities in SC Child- and Youth-Friendly Spaces are implemented on time, within the budget, according to quality standards and as

per the monthly plan.

Where challenges arise, ensure that these are flagged early, communicated to the CP Coordinator and addressed in an appropriate way.

Lead the preparation of all procurement and administrative documents required for program implementation.

Work with child protection committees and support monthly meetings to map protection risks in the community and feedback for programmer improvement.

Establish, maintain and strengthen linkages in the management and implementation of the emergency Project.

Profile all community stakeholders that we work with.

Using CP case management approach Identify children with child protection concerns, document them and refer them to service providers.

Identify and document the separated and unaccompanied children according to the standard family tracing and reunification procedures and in line with Save the Children’s child safeguarding policy.

Organize and coordinate community dialogue meetings to discuss child protection issues with children and community members

Ensure that all program data is properly and regularly collected by field staff, check data and ensure that it is logically presented to the Child Protection Program Manager

Coordinate situation and needs assessment in the project sites to determine needed interventions within the context of operations of SCI.

Provide follow-up child protection training where required. Contribute to grant close-out processes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

University Bachelor’s Degree in sociology, social sciences, law, community development, arts, social administration.

Experience working with children in child protection/social work

Commitment to child protection and respect of the best interest of the child

Understanding of protection concerns for children

Strong interpersonal skills, ethical sensitivity and ability to empathize with children and their careers Experience in community mobilization and conducting outreach activities

Good communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English and Somali Strong motivation and willingness to work with children for their wellbeing

Ability to work under pressure and willingness to work flexible hours when necessary.

Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles including rights-based approaches
