Job Description

Position: Education Officer

Location: Mogadishu ( Banadir Region)

Reports to: Deputy Education Program Manager

Background

Alight (formerly ARC) is an International NGO with offices in different regions in Somalia. It implements various projects in South and Central Somalia and Somaliland with Education, health, livelihoods and protection as the key strength areas for the organization.

Summary

Alight/ARC has been implementing education projects for Refugee and Asylum seekers in Banadir Region, but with tremendous work and smooth implementation of activities, Alight’s Education Program is getting more funds and is expanding, becoming one of Alight/ARC’s leading projects in Somalia. With the current expansion of Education Program, there is need for Education Officer to support project objectives and deliverables, including expanding in the Gedo Region of Jubaland. The position will therefore cover working with schools and CEC members, and government agencies, and the respective departments of the ministry of education for education support for Refugees and Asylum seekers Children, and those of IDPs in Gedo Region.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Project Officer shall carry out the following duties and Responsibilities:

Implement project activities in accordance with project objectives and set work plans.

Prepare project progress report and share timely with Deputy Education Program Manager

Work with school principals and CECs to keep track on attendance and performance of Refugee and Asylum seekers children, and children in IDP camps.

Manage project budgets efficiently and in line with donor guidelines and project plans.

Ensure that education needs of target group children including those who have special needs are met through quality education delivery, protection from SGBV and other forms of abuse.

Keep updated data of Refugees and Asylum seekers Children and children in IDPs in schools and data of engaged schools’ information

Perform any other duty as assigned by the line manager.

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Post -graduate degree in education or a related field.

A minimum of 3 – 5 years of relevant hands on experience in working Programme in areas of emergency response.

Excellent verbal and written command of the English Language;

Ability to conceptualize, write and edit letters and proposals;

Ability to work independently and on a team, with strict deadlines;

Strong organizational skills;

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email and internet applications;

Knowledge of the role of NGOs and approaches to aid and development

KEY BEHAVIORS & ABILITIES

Excellent coordination and communication skills

Should have good documentation and dissemination / presentation skills

Should be able to live, work and travel in an insecure environment, following strict security guidelines at all times.

Proven capacity to work in a quickly moving, unstable situation and work against targeted outputs with tight time frames and deadlines
