Background:
FCA is a Finnish organization and rights-based actor with 70 years of experience and operations in 13 countries globally. FCA’s actions is guided by the international human rights standards and principles. Its work aims to break the circle of poverty and violence. In Somalia, FCA works to address the challenging context by strengthening good governance and reconciliation, increasing access to quality education for vulnerable children and promoting livelihoods for women and youth, contributing to sustainable growth, development and long-lasting peace in the country.
Primary purpose of the position:
Under the direct guidance and supervision of the Business Development Manager and with the support of the Programme Manager and HO Manager of International Communication, the Communication Officer will support the development and effective implementation of the Communication and Advocacy Strategy of FCA Somalia Country Office, with the aim of increasing awareness of its country programme among beneficiaries, communities, partners, development and humanitarian actors, donors, media, government institutions, and the Somali public.
Communication Officer will be the focal point for media content development, media internal and external relations, field visits, advocacy and dissemination of information including launch of reports, studies and awareness and information campaigns on behalf of FCA Somalia.
Main tasks:
Ensure clear, coherent and consistent communication and advocacy about the strategic focus, activities, results and impacts of FCA Somalia
- Support the effective development and implementation of FCA’s country office communication and advocacy strategy, in line with FCA global Communication and Advocacy Strategies
- Support different projects in FCA Somalia to develop specific project communication and advocacy strategy and alignment with the donor’s communication requirements, if necessary.
- Support, manage and elaborate the contents of FCA Somalia social media platforms and ensure information is clearly presented, relevant and continuously updated.
- Prepare communication materials, including print, digital, voice and visual media in accordance with FCA’s brand guidelines
- Support the formulation and dissemination of Country Programme Annual Reporting and results including development of bi-annual newsletters for country office
- Provides communication support as needed for seminars, workshop, conferences, public events on major issues and events concerning FCA country programme implementation.
Manage media relations on behalf of FCA Somalia
- Provide technical assistance to Project Managers and respective partners to ensure that the project communication and advocacy strategy is effectively implemented and monitored; and clear messages and appropriate channel of communication are developed and identified.
- Provide specific support to the EU funded local governance project to ensure effective communication and visibility of the project implementation, results and impacts, in line with the EU strategy.
- Work closely with the project and MEAL teams to identify and document success stories, identify media opportunities, synthesize best practices, and document lessons learned for sharing and learning internally and externally
- Provide translation of concepts and issues into a form that can be readily used by the media and understood by the public.
- Coordinate with service providers (e.g. printers, designers, photographers, writers, editors, advertising/ marketing/event coordination agencies) for the development of print media features, radio and television programmes
- Contribute to regular consolidation of project reports by highlighting clear achievements, results and impact;
- Organize project related creation, updating and dissemination of specific products such as leaflets and publications to the most appropriate recipients and audiences;
- Plan and coordinate field visits for FCA staff, journalists, partners, stakeholders and other visitors.
Support advocacy campaigns across country programme of FCA Somalia
- Provide advice on strategic and innovative approaches to communicating FCA’s work and support the planning and implementation of advocacy campaigns directed at a broad range of stakeholders.
- In line with the communications strategy, proactively advocate key advocacy messages with media and partners, ensuring consistency and clarity of agreed messages.
- Organize and support publicity, advocacy, knowledge-sharing and promotional opportunities in support of project activities/milestones in the country.
Experience, competence and qualifications:
- University degree in journalism, communications or other related studies.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in journalism or communications (both internal and external).
- Proven experience of basic photography. Experience of video production is an advantage.
- Good software skills for communication materials
- Ability to communicate flawlessly in English, both written and spoken.
- Ability to write emotionally and informationally captivating website articles and social media posts for a broad audience.
- Strong networking skills and ability to work with people from various backgrounds.
- Professional experience of peace building and local governance, development cooperation or humanitarian work is an advantage.
- Ability to extract, interpret, analyze data and resolve problems.
- Sensitivity to clan dynamics and understanding of the socio-economic and political situation in Somalia
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work well with others and to develop and maintain good collaboration among project staff, partners, other stakeholders and beneficiaries such as women, youth, religious and community leaders
- Considerable amount of travel across Somalia is required
The selected incumbent will be firstly provided with a probation period of 3 months. The compensation is based on FCA Compensation System and depends on prior work experience.
