In 2019, in line with its growth strategy, The Pharo Foundation took over this prestigious school, along with the Kindergarten and the Secondary School in Sheikh. The school was built to address the educational gap evident in primary schools. The school is built on an acre of land located in Shacab Area – Koodbuur District.
The Pharo Primary School implements a formal education programme for the primary level (grade 1 to grade 8). The school has 16 classrooms and teaches more than 540 students between the ages of 6 – 13. The Pharo Primary School delivers an integrated curriculum which covers different development areas that are designed for the 21st century learner. The education programme includes studies in Somali, Arabic, English, Mathematics, Humanities, Science & Technology and Creative Arts. The school is equipped with supporting facilities which include a computer lab, a science lab, an arts lab, an outdoor playground, and a library
Headquartered in London, the Foundation also has an operational HQ in Nairobi and offices in Addis Ababa, Assosa and Hargeisa.
Position: Primary School Nurse
Location: Hargeisa
Reporting to: The Principal
This is an exciting opportunity to play a meaningful role in the growth of The Pharo Primary school and the pursuit of its goals.
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic School Nurse to work full-time at prestigious Primary school. The School Nurse will support student success by performing and interpreting health screenings, medical examinations, and assessing student health needs such as administering emergency care and first aid treatment. The Nurse will provide health counselling and address the physical, mental, and social needs of students. The Nurse will also be required to provide a safe and healthy environment in order to maximize
students’ potential to learn and succeed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Deliver high-quality nursing care to the school community
Assuming responsibility for and ensuring that proper provision is made for any student in the school who feels unwell. This will include the appropriate medical assessment of the situation and treatment as necessary, in a triage role, including contact with parents/guardians and teaching staff. The Nurse will be responsible for the supervision of the student until the parents are available to look after the student
Assessing the extent of more serious injuries and organizing provision of medical treatment
Evaluates the health status of students at the assigned school by performing health screenings, tests, and physical examinations (i.e. vision, hearing, dental, scoliosis, and blood pressure) and interprets/communicates findings to students, parents/guardians, and school personnel.
Provides direct nursing care to students and staff by administering medication, immunizations, first aid, emergency health care, and nursing care prescribed by a medical provider; and accompanies students to the hospital as necessary.
Observes students on a regular basis to monitor illness and provide early detection of communicable diseases, child abuse, substance abuse, mental illness, depression, eating disorders, chronic illness, and physical defects; makes referrals to other professional staff members and community agencies as needed; and communicates findings to parents/guardians as appropriate.
Reports suspected cases of child abuse and neglect through the proper channels.
Enforces established infection control policies and procedures on the exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious diseases.
Serves as a resource to teachers and staff at the assigned school regarding the health needs of students and recommends modifications of the student’s educational program/environment as necessary.
Actively participating in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and emergencies that may occur at school
Maintains proper documentation and health records on all students within the assigned school, prepares/submits reports as required.
Requisitions needed supplies and equipment for the health clinic at the assigned school.
Required Qualities and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
Must have graduated from an accredited school of professional nursing with some work experience as a Nurse.
Must have knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, and techniques within a school environment to include knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, child growth/development, basic pharmacology, medical terminology, and infection control measures.
Must possess skills in standard nursing procedures and the ability to perform/interpret health screenings and physical examinations.
Must possess the ability to maintain comprehensive health records, prepare clear/concise medical reports and use appropriate computer systems.
Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and guardians.
Be a self-starter or self-motivated.
Must be first aid trained.
