The Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) is an Ethiopian civil society development organization that works with other organizations to promote, facilitate and build organizational capacity to make mainstream government and non-governmental service delivery and development programs accessible to, and inclusive of, persons with disabilities. One of the six program priorities for ECDD is Social Inclusion and Protection Program(SIP), where ECDD is implementing various program under it.
ECDD is currently a consortium member that consists of ZOA, The Leprosy Mission Ethiopia (TLME), The African Disability Forum (ADF), VNGI and The Hague Academy for Local Governance for a five year project entitled ‘ We Are Able!’ , with an overall objective By 2025, [through engagement with public authorities (formal and informal powerholders),] men and women with disabilities and other marginalized groups,[through resilient and capable local CSOs/DPOs…]are successfully influencing laws, policies, practices and norms for improved food security for all.
The We are able! Project initiated to strengthen Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Disabled People Organizations (DPOs) in six fragile and conflict affected countries (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia) in their lobby and advocacy for sustainable and inclusive access to basic resources, contributing to improved food security (SDG2). Strengthening CSOs/DPOs boosts the voice of women and men with disabilities and other marginalized groups who struggle on a daily basis to access basic resources such as land and water for their food security. The project is implemented in Oromia region- East Harargie, Diredewa, Harar and Addis Ababa.
Description of Tasks
The project Officer is based , in Harar and reports to the Project coordinator and the social inclusion and protection team lead. The project officer is responsible for the overall implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of activities and results of the project.
Specifically, the project coordinator is responsible to:
1. Conduct local participatory mapping and diagnosis on the situation of persons with disabilities at project target towns.
2. Facilitate inclusive skills training/TVET and community-based training (CBT)
3. Provide technical support and build the capacity of organizations of persons with disabilities (DPOs) through various capacity building trainings
4. Support CSOs/DPOs to utilize PPP for improved food security, create and utilize their own networking platform on disability and food security
5. Provide technical support for the implementation of inclusive actions led by DPOs
6. Organize trainings for DPO and CSO leaders on disability related laws and policies to enhance their capacity on lobbying and advocacy.
7. Provide project related content for the ECDD Minch disability information Interactive Voice Response (IVR) telephone platform
- Represent ECDD in different government and non-governmental consortia, platforms and meetings at the intervention area.
- Collect, document and disseminate examples of good practice and lessons learned
- Ensure implementation of the ECDD Child and Adults-at-Risk Safeguarding Policy, by ECDD and collaborating Project partner and consultant personnel in the target Region
- Undertake such other tasks as may be assigned by the Project coordinator , the Social Inclusion and Protection team lead , the Program Director and/or the Executive Director.
Job Requirement
1. Education – First degree in Agriculture, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or other relevant fields Professional experience – minimum 5 years of responsibility for the implementation of donor-funded projects preferable on livelihood and food security programs.
2. Good understanding on food security, and on disability inclusive policies and programmes
3. Good knowledge on advocacy
4. Previous professional experience working with persons with disabilities desirable
5. Excellent interpersonal relationships and team work
6. Excellent communication skills
7. Able and willing to travel frequently to project intervention areas
8. Competence in the use of computer applications
9. Fluency in English and Amharic or Ethiopian Sign Language, knowledge of other Ethiopian languages also desirable
