Title: Accountant

Location: Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Reporting to: Executive Director

Barwaaqo Voluntary Organization (BVO) is a non-political, non-governmental, and non-profit making development action-oriented and advocacy organization that was founded in 1996 by a committed gender balanced group in Somaliland. BVO strives to perform social development work in Somaliland and has been implementing climate change, environmental protection, and livelihood programs in the country, which enables the finding of solutions to Somaliland’s environmental challenges. BVO fights hunger and promotes poverty reduction, human rights, women’s and children’s rights, and justice for all.

BVO has also been involved in women’s political participation and economic empowerment, and provides FGM awareness campaigns as well as implements projects aimed to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) in Somaliland. BVO operates in all six regions of Somaliland.

Role purpose

Barwaaqo Voluntary Organization is seeking to recruit an accountant who will handle all the accounting duties in BVO.

As an accountant, you will be responsible for preparing accounts, budgeting and managing financial information.

Accountants’ core responsibilities are typically to prepare and examine financial records, assuring information is up to date and accurate.

The following are some of the key duties and responsibilities:

  • Oversee the organization’s financial operations and ensure timely and accurate financial reports and practices, such as cash management, payroll, financial disbursements, ledgers, and so on.
  • responsible for entering financial information and maintaining all financial records for projects and for the organization.
  • preparing and maintaining donor agreements and staff contracts.
  • Manage financial control, prepare and analyze budgets, generate financial reports, and make budget spending recommendations to the organization.
  • Obtain approval from the director and from the donors on all procurements and purchases for the projects and for the organization.
  • Monitor the expenditures to ensure that program funds are utilized appropriately by the close of the fiscal year.
  • Provide orientation and training to the organization’s staff on cost-effective management.
  • Ensure that all financial reporting is completed on time and submitted to donors.
  • Oversee the financial audits of all the organization’s projects.
  • Contribute financial resources to proposal development, project management, HRM policies, logistics, travel, and other administrative areas.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • bachelor’s degree in business administration or accounting, and a master’s degree in business administration.
  • full knowledge of administrative qualifications like bookkeeping and others.
  • proven track record of experience in budget and financial report preparation.
  • A Certificate in Secretarial is an added advantage.
  • knowledge of child rights and child protection.
  • Proficiency in computer knowledge and accounting packages and experience in using accountant’s software (e.g. QuickBooks) and Excel spreadsheets
  • pro-active and capable of managing workload under the supervision of your line manager
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in accounting and finance is preferable in an INGO.

  • excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with people from a variety of professional and national backgrounds
  • You must be highly motivated, enthusiastic, well-organized, and capable of working under pressure.
  • You may be required to work irregular hours in accordance with the needs of the role;
