SOS Children’s Villages Somalia has officially been working in Somalia since 1985. SOS is currently working in 137 countries worldwide. We are committed to the welfare of children – often throughout the whole of their childhood, and to strengthening families and communities as a preventive measure in the fight against abandonment and social neglect. We also run education and health facilities. With the SOS Children’s Village concept, the organization pioneered a family approach to the long-term care of orphaned and abandoned children.

SOS Children’s Villages Somalia currently works in five regions; Banadir Regions (almost all districts), Bay, Bakol and Lower Shabelle in Southwest State, Middle Shabelle in HirShabelle State.

Job Title: AGRONOMIST

Report to: Area Manager

Location: Mogadishu (Heliwa)

Job Summary:

The Agronomist will be tresponsibile to lead the implementation and set up of climate-smart agriculture practice using hydroponic farming with its constant water and nutrient supply system in Mogadishu in order to ensure sustainability and encourage a snowball effect. The position holder will be expected to keep abreast of the contemporary agricultural practices and approaches which provide additional expertise and efficiency for the SOS Hydroponic farming project.

Key Tasks

Ensures that the Agro projects implementation is carried out in line with the set objectives, timeframe, allocated budget and the internally adopted coordination mechanisms

Review the agronomic aspects of the agriculture sector and priorities needs to inform the hydroponic expert.

Work closely with hydroponic expert to acquire the skill and capacity needs in setting up climate smart agricultural activities and be able to transfer the knowledge and skills to the youth.

Provide advice and technical support in the development of relevant and impactful agronomy services in the local context.

Inform and train youth producers in good agronomic practices through implementing, monitoring and reporting on a series of best practice agronomy field demonstrations with participating producers and staff members.

Develop technical and practical materials for producer and farmer support staff use including guidelines, leaflets technical notes and manuals in the areas of climate smart farming trials management.

Facilitate development of agronomy capacity through supporting continuous professional development for youth farmers and contributing to succession plans in the sustainable management of the hydroponic farming system.

Training other junior teams or interns on how farming practices and procedures during the project.

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, or related field

2 to 4  years’ experience in a similar field of activity

Excellent knowledge of political, security, social and cultural of the assigned environment.

Excellent, reporting, presentation, analytical and networking skills

Ability to make quick, sound decisions when faced with highly challenging and sensitive matters

Excellent command of English and Somali language

Computer proficiency especially in MS Office suit

Competencies – knowledge, skills, abilities:

Demonstrated competency in project planning, budgeting, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, accountability to affected populations and reporting writing skills is key consideration for the position.

Ability to ensure quality health & nutrition services by implementing relevant guidelines and protocols

Ability to manage and work with teams

People skills such as problem solving & handling conflict

Report writing skills

Understanding local contexts and dialogues is additional value.
