ASSISTANT DRAMA WRITTER

• Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
• Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure

Job Purpose:

To take responsibility for the delivery of the scripts for the radio serial drama part of the project ’Somali Women towards Economic Empowerment and Transformation’ (SWEET).

Main Duties:

1. To assist Lead Writer in the delivery of scripts for the radio serial drama which strictly adhere to agreed storylines, characteristics and characterization and to the principles of behavior change drama to the highest quality in terms of language, creativity, dramatization, movement and use of FX to the correct duration and on time.
2. Be responsible for keeping to the production schedule.
3. To be responsible for accurate, honest and constructive peer review of colleagues’ scripts, judging them by the criteria of strict adherence to agreed storylines, characteristics and characterization, to the principles of behavior change drama, to BBC editorial standards, to the highest quality in terms of language, creativity, dramatization, movement and use of FX.
4. To ensure full continuity and adherence to the principles of drama behavioural change.
5. To follow BBC safety requirements and instructions, especially in relation to emergencies and hostile environments.
6. To travel regularly to Somaliland and other parts in Somalia more broadly when/if security situation permits.
7. Any other tasks that might be reasonably assigned by your line manager.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience Required

• Significant demonstratable experience of drama writing and journalism in Somalia.
• A thematic specialization in women rights, economic empowerment is desirable.
• An understanding and appreciation of core BBC values of impartiality, independence and accuracy.
• Strong understanding of the role of communication in development.
• Ability to work on own initiative and organise time effectively to multiple deadlines. Capacity to juggle competing priorities and a busy programme of work while working to agreed strategy.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
• Good working knowledge of computer packages including email, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Commitment to the aims and objectives of BBC Media Action and that of the SWEET project.
