The primary role is to aid the Midwife in taking blood pressure, listening to the baby’s heart rate, checking the patient’s weight, tracking labour contractions, keeping information needed for the birth certificate, such as the time of birth, and helping make the mother comfortable as well as birth spacing counselling and IYCF. | |||||||||

| 8. Specific duties & responsibilities | Job Responsibilities § Provide support in all aspects of midwifery care under the indirect supervision of qualified midwife staff members, assist in assessing the mother and baby during the postnatal care and provide direct care working with mothers within their plan of care. § Be able to plan, and prioritise tasks to meet the needs of women and their babies § Work under own initiative and undertake basic observations on mothers, including Blood Pressure, Temperature, Pulse, Respirations, Urinalysis, Height Measurement and Weight. § Respond to clinical emergencies ensuring patient safety at all times and alerting appropriate staff members promptly. § Enabling mothers to overcome common problems with breastfeeding during the first few days and weeks of life and supporting mothers with safe bottle feeding. § Provide support to women during labour and birth to ensure normal delivery of the newborn. § Support parents to cope with miscarriage, termination, stillbirth and neonatal death. § Maternal tetanus immunisation. § Malaria prevention (intermittent preventive treatment and insecticide-treated bed nets). § Screening and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections § Understand screening and treatment for anaemia. § Administer micronutrient supplements in pregnancy (e.g. iron, folate, vitamin A) § Teach women and families about danger signs in pregnancy, labour and delivery, postpartum and the newborn. § Help women and families make a child spacing plan. § On request, perform any additional duties or instruction given by the Midwife. |
