Abaarso is a premier 7th-12th grade co-ed boarding school outside Hargeisa, Somaliland that is changing lives and helping to rebuild a nation.

Job Purpose

The Student Life Assistant is responsible for supporting the Student Life portfolio in building a community of healthy student leaders and learners through boarding school programming. The incumbent will be responsible for the management of the male student dorm in order to ensure that students are healthy and maintain behavioral expectations in residential and dining areas. Working with the Dorm Head/Parent, this person will assist in  any dorm-related issues including student conflicts, issues of health and hygiene within the dorm, and any maintenance issues or utility concerns.

The assistant will directly report to the Director  of Student Life. The Key Focus Areas for the incumbent will include Dorm Life, Student Life & Mentorship and Health & Wellness.The role will offer the incumbent to acquire the following skills:

  • Planning & Coordination
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Management
  • Communication & Giving Feedback
  •  Health, Wellness & Safety

Duties and Responsibilities

Dorm Life

  • Assist in the running of the boys dorm in accordance to the student handbook to maintain a friendly, welcoming and happy environment
  • Ensure a visible presence in and around the premises of the dorm daily, especially in the early morning, during breaks and in the late afternoon.
  •  Assist in monitoring the students’ welfare and behaviour and report any problems in the dorm to the Director of Student Life
  • Guide students in how to maintain general cleanliness and tidiness in dorms and ensure that these tasks are carried out by students and student leaders
  • Assist in conducting daily room checks Saturday through Wednesday, giving consequences to students whose rooms do not meet expectations
  • Coordinate weekly dorm meetings and facilitate Student Handbook training for dorm related issues
  • Assist in coordinating student arrivals, including new and returning students, and student departures when required

 Student Life & Mentorship

  • Facilitate the coordination of sporting and club activities for the students to promote physical, psychological and mental wellness
  • Creates monitoring schedules for all extracurricular activities, and supports individual coaches by ensuring students have equal to extracurricular activities.
  • Facilitate the coordination of community service programs which include the Primary and Orphanage Tutoring by working closely with the Director of Student Life.
  • Database management for community engagements, projects and activities done under Leadership and Community Service.
  • Monitor a system to hold students accountable for a certain number of community service hours to be met each semester and ensures monitoring of individual and program performance.

Health & Wellness

  • Monitor on an interval basis the efficiency, cleanliness, and overall culture inside the student dining hall and provide updates to Director Student Life
  • Monitor and support the 12th Grade Dining Hall Interns in creating student-led systems for the management of food distribution and cleaning of the dining hall after each meal.
  • Keep track of cleaning supplies and equipment for cleaning and submit requisitions to the Director Student Life.
  • Mentor and encourage student to maintain a healthy environment in the dining halls each semester and ensures monitoring of individual and program performance.

Health & Wellness

  • Monitor on an interval basis the efficiency, cleanliness, and overall culture inside the student dining hall and provide updates to Director Student Life

The successful candidate will

  • Be educated to bachelor degree level.
  • At least 3 years working experience in a boarding school setting.
  • Have a strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Be experienced in planning & coordination.
  • Have a caring and compassionate nature.
  • Be fluently spoken and written Somali
