JOB TITLE: Child welfare / Protection Officer
LOCATION: Kismayo, Somalia
CONTRACT DURATION: until 31/12/2022
START DATE: June 2022
SALARY GRADE: According to SIF’S National Staff Salary Scale
General description of the position:
The Protection Officer is responsible for the technical supervision and coordination of all protection-related activities for the orphan’s education program in Marsabit under the supervision of the Child Protection and Education Coordinator. S/he will ensure that training and capacity building needs of field protection staff are addressed, activities under the program are effectively and efficiently implemented and the protection services and activities meet quality standards in the sector.
Main Responsibilities
- Ensuring quality in the implementation of activities and services as well as the adherence to protection standards;
- Regularly verify the status of the case management database, conduct case reviews and provide feedback to Social Workers team leader
- Organize regular and ad hoc case management meetings with Social Workers Team, to discuss general challenges in their tasks;
- Review and share Orphan child data and information collected and compile regular protection reports highlighting gaps, concerns and trends to inform future programing;
- Coordinate and supervise psychosocial support activities that are conducted in support of the orphans in the program;
- Provide guidance to Social Workers in the planning and implementation of participatory community activities, awareness sessions and campaigns and in the general communication with the orphans
- Identify capacity building needs of Social Workers assessing their knowledge and skills and accordingly provide learning opportunities through trainings, workshops and/or simulation exercises;
- Establish and maintain collaborative relations with relevant partners and other project stakeholders working in the assigned location
- Mapping out the resources or services that can provide support to the orphans in order to verify also existing self-protection and coping structures amongst the households;
- Engaging in discussions/dialogue sessions with guardians and orphans on the issues that affect them on an ongoing basis and working with the community to find or develop appropriate solutions
- Ensure – through clear weekly and monthly work plans – protection monitoring and field assessment activities are carried out in a timely, effective and technically sound manner
- Ensure dissemination of clear and reliable information on service provision and other preselected key topics;
- Conduct duties in accordance with SIF programs and protection SOPs;
- Prepare and submit timely activity plans and reports;
- Conduct duties in strict accordance with SIF Code of Conduct and the principle of confidentiality;
- Proactively participate in relevant coordination meetings, as scheduled or requested by the supervisor;
- Any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Skills and Qualifications
- University Degree in Development Studies, Sociology, Community Development, or any relevant social science from a recognized institution.
- Minimum 3 years relevant professional experience (of which at least 1 year in a supervisory role)
- Computer/IT literacy (Word Processing, Spreadsheets, net-based communication, etc)
- Good leadership skills
- Strong technical knowledge in child protection;
- Prior experience dealing with OVC would be a distinct advantage
- Familiarity with international protection and human rights standards, with special emphasis on orphans;
- Demonstrated commitment to promotion and respect for child rights;
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of local communities and customary rules
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken)

- Respect and promote SIF’s Policies and Agree to comply with SIF Code of Conduct and ensures Child Safeguarding standards are upheld.
- Report to your line manager any discrepancies of SIF’s policies among the team or partners
- Maintain confidentiality at all times about SIF data and information.
