NEXUS Consortium Somalia (https://nexusom.org/) is an association for change in response to the contemporary challenges to Somalia and Somaliland. The main goal of NEXUS Consortium is to transform the humanitarian, development, and peace ecosystem. The consortium, led by eight pioneering Somali NGOs, aspires to advance a locally driven agenda for change by building partnerships between communities, civil society, and the public and private sectors as well as through the implementation of integrated and sustainable interventions across the triple nexus of humanitarian, peace, and development.

  1. Reports to: Business Development Manager
  2. Duty Station: Somalia/Somaliland with external travels.
  3. Job Purpose: The key purpose of this position is to assist and support Nexus Consortium communication needs. Implement the consortium’s communication strategy in consultation with the Director and other senior staff. Provide support to the secretariat with media engagement and other services that include but not limited to devising communications strategies, creating content, and organizing events and campaigns. Assist in the production of capacity building communication material e.g., toolkits, publications, documentary, etc. Supports the design, implementation, and monitoring of communication strategy and co-ordinates the production of internal and external communications, assists in the sub-editing and proof reading of communications products including but not limited to success stories, photographs, videos, and social media.
  4. Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development and production of communication tools, including publications, MS PowerPoint presentations and audio-visual material.
  • Work with the secretariat to conceptualize, develop and implement communications strategies and campaigns.
  • Proactively participate in creation and production of IEC materials for Consortium use.
  • Monitor feedback and response from the community for the development and improvement of communication strategy.
  • Organize events, campaigns to promote key messages among beneficiaries.
  • Coordinate development and implementation of National Organization advocacy strategy.
  • Develop clear and effective guidelines and protocols for sector-wide advocacy efforts in the country.
  • Be a focal point person for gender-advocating and championing integration of gender in all programs.
  • Support programme partners in media and communications related capacity building.
  • Document and publish Nexus Consortium’s learning in Somalia by contributing to case studies, success stories, articles, and media publications.
  • Regularly and consistently update the Consortium social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and ensure we disseminate information about our program on a weekly basis.
  • Co-ordinate the production of internal and external communications, assists in the sub-editing and proof reading of communications products including but not limited to success stories, photographs, video, and social media.
  • Ensure adequate media coverage for all programme activities, functions and press releases/press statements.
  • Prepare project newsletters, brochures, and other publicity materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Skills and Qualifications

  • minimum of bachelor’s degree in communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, or any other related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in communications in a humanitarian setting.
  • Demonstrable skills and experience in effective media relations.
  • A demonstrable understanding of NGO media in the context of development.
  • Demonstrable and proven strong conceptual, research, analytical and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of how to present information to different audiences, including media.
  • Good knowledge of Nexus Consortium mandate, activities, pillars, and localization of aid (an added advantage).
  • Experience with design & implementation of Advocacy and Communications strategies and understanding of trends in the development sector.
  • Demonstrated skill in program communication, development of information and Communication material.
  • Ability to produce analytical and well-presented reports and publications.
  • Good knowledge of the Somali context.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in simple language.
  • Demonstrable ability to work independently, think strategically as well as work within a team.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Some graphic design skills and the ability to develop simple infographics is desirable.
  • Excellent analytical, networking and presentation skills.
  • Proven writing, editing, design, videography, or photography skills.
  • A high level of computer literacy.
