Background Information 

Somali National University (SNU) was established in 1954 as a public institution. After twenty-four years of Civil War, it was reopened on 16 August 2014. The event was chaired by former President and Chancellor of the University, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. With five campuses, 12 colleges, 700 staff and almost 10,000 students, SNU has developed into one of the largest higher learning institutions in the country.  

 Key Duties and Responsibilities 

The key duties and responsibilities of the successful candidate are: 

• To provide vision, academic leadership and strategic management of the faculty. 

• Promote and encourage academic excellence, as well as the delivery of high-quality academic services at the faculty level. 
• Ensure quality education in all aspects of teaching, learning and research (curriculum, delivery models, student advisement and learning outcomes, etc.). 
• Enhance the Faculty’s and University’s stature and academic reputation inside and outside the country. 
• Plan and administer the faculty’s annual budget. 
• Support the overall strategic and operational processes of the University by working with the rector, deputy rectors, chairs and academic committees. 

• Build and maintain a climate of operational excellence, professional integrity, and the development of innovation. 
• Maintain collaboration with local, regional and international universities, as well as with other professional organizations, in the interest of institutional development and other relevant collaborative efforts. 

 Requirements for the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Tropical Medicine position 

The successful candidate shall have: 

• A Medical Degree (MBBS) 
• A Master’s Degree (preferably PhD) in Public Health from an academically highly ranked institution(s). 
• Minimum 15 years of relevant work experience.  
• Strong track record of research, publications, and teaching reflecting academic excellence. 
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary setting. 

• An excellent command of the English Language. 
• Substantial record of managerial and administrative experience to run a large organization at a senior level, requiring capacity development, innovation, management of change, human resources, digitalization and ICT technology, budgeting and fiscal management, as well as quality assurance processes.  
• Proven ability to lead and motivate staff to effectively discharge the mandate of the faculty. 
• Considerable experience to create and promote an environment that is conducive to learning and work.  
• Demonstrated ability to establish and successfully manage collaborative relationships with universities, line ministries, industries, funding organizations and relevant stakeholders.  

• Possess the knowledge and experience to develop and execute the faculty’s strategic plan, budgeting and financial policy. 
• High professional integrity, work ethics and the ability to meet deadlines.
