Background

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is active in around 130 countries every year. With field presences in over 80 countries, UNV is represented worldwide. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). UNV is headquartered in Bonn, Germany, with a field presence through 6 regional offices and 50+ field units.

Organizational setting

The Human Resources Section (HRS) provides a full range of HR services to the organization and its workforce. Within HRS, the Capacity Development Team (CDT) leads the design and delivery of learning programs and services for UN Volunteers serving with the UN system globally. As part of their assignment, UN Volunteers can access learning programmes and services which include an online learning platforms and content (e.g. UNV e-Campus, onboarding portal, Linkedin Learning). Workshops and face-to-face trainings are regularly offered to specific target audiences in virtual and onsite formats. UN Volunteers also benefit from individual coaching opportunities. In support of its UN partners, donors and other stakeholders CDT also delivers capacity development and learning programmes tailored to specific initiatives.

In order to increase and sustain delivery of UNV learning programmes through more innovative content, additional support is needed to produce online communications content and materials.

Objectives, responsibility and description of work

CDT reaches out to diverse volunteer groups through eCampus, newsletters, and communication platform Moosend. External audiences comprise our UN and funding partners, civil society organizations (including volunteer-involving organizations), and the general global public.

Under the direction of the Learning Specialist, the incumbent is expected to contribute to:

  • Supporting the sourcing, assessment and planning of editorial content;
  • Writing content for various UNV learning programmes, products, platforms and the experiences of UN Volunteers;
  • Supporting marketing of UNV learning programme; and
  • Updating content on UNV learning programmes, products, and platforms.

In addition, the consultant will integrate comments and changes requested as a result of in-house consultation and re-edit the document / prepare text content necessary for the designer to implement first layout. S/he will input all suggested changes, proofread the lay-out, and finalize editing of content (including storyboard for videos and social media posts/campaigns, as applicable).

Working remotely the consultant will also interact with other members of the CD team. Existing materials will be provided, and a Skype call held at the beginning to explain the scope of work in details for each project. Guidance during the work process will also be provided.

 Required Competencies

  • Demonstrated research and writing skills on products related to UN Volunteer learning programmes and products;
  • Creative open-minded team player with strong initiative and excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work within tight deadlines;
  • Have affinity with or interest in volunteerism as a mechanism to advance sustainable development;
  • Flexibility and client-oriented approach.
Qualifications

Education: Have completed bachelor’s as a minimum – university level studies/degree in language-oriented field or Communications preferable.

  • Writing and/or editing experience for online and/or print publications related to UN Volunteer learning programmes and products;
  • Experience of web and social media development;
  • Demonstrate good analytical, communication and consolidation skills;
  • Have strong word processing and good design software skills;
  • Familiarity with instructional design and educational media is an added advantage.

Language requirement:

Excellent knowledge of English is a requirement. Fluency in French and Spanish is an advantage.

Criteria for Selection of the best Offer:
The selection of the best offer will be based on the combined scoring method, where the qualifications and experience will be weighted 70 per cent, and then combined with the price offer, which will be weighted 30 per cent.

Key selection criteria are

  • Experience writing and/or editing experience for online and/or print publications related to UN Volunteer learning programmes and products (30%)

    • Experience writing/editing content that that conveys clear and powerful messages (20%)

    • Experience developing learning storyboards for production of courses and knowledge products (20%)

Recommended Presentation of Offer

Applicants have to provide a technical and financial proposal. 

The technical proposal shall consist of:

  • Motivation Letter describing their interest in the assignment and why they are the most suitable for the work;
  • Personal CV or P11, indicating all past experience from similar projects, as well as the contact details (email and telephone number) of the Candidate and at least three (3) professional references;
  • Portfolio / samples of previous work should be included in your application.

The financial proposal shall consist of

If an Offeror is employed by an organization/company/institution, and he/she expects his/her employer to charge a management fee in the process of releasing him/her to UNV under Reimbursable Loan Agreement (RLA), the Offeror must indicate at this point, and ensure that all such costs are duly incorporated in the financial proposal submitted to UNDP.
