English-Somali Translator/Interpreter

Background

The employee needs English to Somali translation/interpretation. Translation work is mainly media and political text. Specifically, texts for translation will have terminologies from the media, politics, governance, legal, human rights, and gender etc.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Translate content from English to Somali vice versa in such a way that the translated text is – in meaning, style and effectiveness – accurate and in good quality.
• Translate online, audio, video, and television media by providing subtitles.
• Translate a variety of documents including political, legal, research, technical, educational, and media materials.
• Proofread to ensure high quality and accuracy of the entire translated document before submitting/dissemination to the client.
• Interpret both simultaneously and consecutively into Somali or English, as required, at online and physical meetings, conferences, and workshops.
• Submit daily, weekly and monthly translation work to line manager on time.
• Respond to urgent and high priority translation need at any time of the day and week.
• Consult with subject matter experts and other colleagues in order to understand specialised concepts and translate them appropriately.
• Contribute to the establishment of accurate terminology and to the development of the terminology database.
• Follow up with clients to ensure satisfaction and understanding.
• Any other job assigned by the line manager.

Competencies

• Good communication skills.
• Good command of the English and Somali languages with excellent writing and speaking abilities.
• Good translation, editing, proofreading skills in English to Somali and vice versa.
• Teamwork – willingness to work with a team.
• Accuracy and attention to Detail.
• Knowledge of the political, security, media, humanitarian context in Somalia.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor Degree in English language or relevant field together with very good English and Somali Languages command.
• A minimum Three (3) years of Experience in working in NGO, Government, Media and private sector
• Proven work experience as a translator, interpreter.

Shortlisted candidates will do written test and oral interview to prove their translation and writing skills.
