Hygiene and Sanitation Officer

Somali Humanitarian Relief Action (SHRA) was established in 1993 in Luuq District, Somalia with a purpose of addressing community development challenges, health and sanitation initiatives, primary education, food security and child protection. SHRA (Somali Humanitarian Relief Action) is tireless working to reduce community vulnerability and build resilient citizenship among the Somalis living in abject poverty due armed conflicts since 1990.

We are inviting highly motivated and qualified individuals to apply for the position of Hygiene and Sanitation Officer to be based in Dolow, Gedo, Somalia.

The Position

Reporting to the Programs Manager, the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer will be in charge of Hygiene and Sanitation Activities in all Project sites of the Organization in Dollow.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide reports on routine sanitation and hygiene promotion activities to the Programme

Manager on daily and weekly basis, ensuring all data is captured.

Coordinate all the Community mobilizers to ensure effective cascading of hygiene promotion activities at the community level.

Supervise the Identification of key hygiene practices to be addressed and carry out activities geared towards the promotion of safe hygiene practices in close liaison with community leaders. Supervise and report on systematic monitoring of latrine cleanliness, usage and maintenance within their assigned zones.

Supervise and Participate in needs assessment, baseline surveys, user satisfaction surveys on privacy and safety of latrines and any other study relevant to sanitation and hygiene promotion and overall SHRA work

Plan and conduct random house to house visits, disseminate hygiene messages and encourage Household members and the general community members to fully participate in good hygiene and sanitation promotion campaigns

Supervise NFIs/WASH/Livelihood Supplies distribution and other promotional materials in their respective section(s).

Educate beneficiaries about key aspects of hygiene in a culturally appropriate manner

Mobilize, motivate and encourage potential leaders to talk to their fellow community members about good hygiene practices.

Implement hygiene promotion initiatives appropriate to the context ensuring the technical and social aspects of water and sanitation programming are integrated. Identify and assess public hygiene risks and needs.

Forging relationships with people in the community in order to get the message across

Job requirements

  1. Diploma in public health, social sciences or related fields.

At least 2 year experience and understanding of Hygiene Promotion and community mobilization in relation to water and sanitation activities

  1. Computer skills.
  2. Demonstrate ability in supervision
  3. Experience in working with water projects
