Action Against Hunger-USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and food security. Action Against Hunger-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 8 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Cambodia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Haiti and Somalia. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $75 million in programs, and approximately 2000 staff based in in the various country offices, Head Quarter in New York City and Operational Centre in Nairobi. Additional growth is anticipated.
I. Summary of position
Hygiene promoter position shall take charge of implementing of hygiene promotion strategy and conducting hygiene promotion session at household and at community level, His/her main roles and in consultation with the WASH Officer shall include; designing, planning, implementing monitoring and reporting on the hygiene promotion activities
Purpose
The role of the Hygiene promoter will be to carry out community assessments, KAP surveys, and define the content, organize and deliver the hygiene promotion program for target populations
Engagement
Represent Action Against Hunger in all coordination forums at community level, district level, collaborate with other implementing partners, INGO, UN bodies and the local communities to ensure successful implementation and smooth running of the projects
Delivery
Successful implementation of WASH interventions in target areas in line with internationally/Nationally accepted standards and ACFs technical guidelines as well as the donor requirements.
Essential job duties:
Implement the hygiene promotion strategy:
The WASH HP is responsible for the following activities:
§ Organize sessions in the communities to identify the deficiencies in terms of hygiene, sanitation and the use of water ;
§ Organize/facilitate group awareness sessions on hygiene practices for men/women in community and other identified locations;
§ Participate in preparing training modules for the promotion of hygiene with the supervisor;
§ Participate in developing teaching tools adapted to various levels of the population: songs, role games, meetings, training, etc. ;
§ Participate in evaluation/assessment missions;
§ Participate in the organization and the distribution of kits.
Train and mobilize the community members:
The WASH HP is responsible for the following activities:
§ Liaise with the authorities, committees and other beneficiaries ;
§ Identify the privileged partners within the communities: schools, hospitals, clinics, mosques, etc.;
§ Apply the methodologies defined for the sensitizing sessions on hygiene promotion;
§ Participate in elaborating a schedule of awareness raising activities;
§ Provide training sessions to community volunteers and/or to targeted populations;
§ Write a summary of the weekly activities ;
§ Propose possible improvements.
Relay Action Against Hunger’s activities to the communities and partners:
The WASH HP is responsible for the following activities:
§ Develop contacts and explain to stakeholders and to populations the activities and the objectives of the programs;
§ Represent the organization with the beneficiaries with the agreement of the hierarchical supervisor;
§ Inform local authorities about all aspects of the programs;
§ Involve and inform the communities in the implementation of the program;
§ Work in collaboration with the stakeholders.
§ Any other official duty that may be assigned by your supervisor from time in response

V. Physical demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.
To travel to the field, the employee must attest to a level of physical fitness capable of enduring physically difficult, highly stressful situations which may include the necessity to walk long distances, to eat a limited diet and/or to reside in potentially uncomfortable housing or tents. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. VI. Working Conditions, Travel and Environment
The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required.
Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international business purposes. While performing the duties of this job in the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as infectious diseases.
Skills and Qualifications
- Qualification in health, hygiene, teaching or community development
- At least 1 year experience in health, hygiene, teaching or community development
- Community mobilization
- Basic hygiene and health practices
- Knowledge on Transmission of water related diseases
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work within a team
- Sense of confidentiality, Organizational capacity, Diplomacy & Persuasion skills
- Ability to build and sustain relationships with community members so as to create a sense of trust and respect
- Good knowledge of the intervention area
