Title: IYCF Counselors
Reporting To: Health and Nutrition Officer
Location: Mogadishu, Somalia
The Role
The IYCF Counselors will provide IYCF counseling to the mothers and other caregivers for effective beneficiary information and skills development in the areas of good nutrition practices. He/she is expected to provide a high standard of promoting optimum health and preventive health care, thereby contributing to a safe, efficient, and effective service to patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Accomplish IYCF counseling to the mothers and other caregivers at project sites.
- Participate in providing IYCF technical support to HIRDO staff (educators, officers and area coordinators)
- Ensure that all staff understand and implement the IYCF program guidelines
- Ensure appropriate and consistent education messaging to mothers and caregivers
- Advise the best feeding options and follow ups as appropriate
- Participate in the development of mother support groups and mother-baby areas.
- Participate in developing regular work plans for the mother support groups and mother-baby areas.
- Prepare field visit plans
- Act as an effective member in promoting, supporting, and protecting IYCF practices (give IYCF awareness sessions and IYCF individual counseling sessions as necessary).
- Give support to IYCF team members as necessary
- Assist in the development and review of educational material
- Prepare training materials and conduct IYCF trainings when necessary
- Make sure all IYCF databases are regularly filled and submitted
- Conduct evaluation and appraisal of staff as required
- Report weekly to the Health and Nutrition Officer
Qualifications & Experience Required Education
- At least Diploma in Nursing, Nutrition or Public Health.
- Relevant training on food and diets, supplementary feeding programs is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the same position.
- Good organization and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work in a team.
- Good interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in Somali required.
