IYCF OFFICER – ERIGAVO

About CARE

CARE is an International NGO working in Somalia and Somaliland. CARE and its partners work with vulnerable communities to address the underlying causes of poverty and promote peace and development, through its strategic goal to reduce poverty by empowering women, enhancing access to resources and services, and improving governance. CARE is looking for suitable candidates to fill the positions of IYCF Officer based in Erigavo with frequent travels and support to project sites.

Key responsibilities

Implementation of IYCF activities in Somaliland

• Develop an action plan to improve IYCF practices through group and individual IYCF counselling for caregivers in Emergency Program
• Complete appropriate assessments of IYCF needs and malpractices and do analysis and come up with clear recommendations.
• Build the capacity of caregivers in other CARE programs using appropriate IYCF counseling tools
• Ensure formation of the mother support group at the community level (in each village) and community IYCF counseling conducted for the group members on regular basis.
• Identify model mothers and explore their best experience and replicate the best experience to improve IYCF practice within the community.
• Identify/develop appropriate IEC materials and flash cards in local language and ensure that the materials are used during each counseling.
• Develop weekly and monthly plan towards the accomplishment of the Good behavioral change of IYCF practices.
• Document case studies regularly and share with the team members and with the nutrition supervisors
• Produce daily, weekly, and monthly report regarding IYCF activities in Somaliland and submit to Supervisor on time.
• Conduct nutrition and health education sessions in the community and liaising with nutrition staff and community members to monitor IYCF activities in project areas.
• Produce good case studies related to IYCF activities in Somaliland
• Develop appropriate IYCF reporting tools for Community and Health Facilities
• Keep record of all counselling done in IYCF registers and do appropriate filing and bookkeeping.
• Any other duties assigned by Supervisor.

Required Qualifications

• A health professional with a first degree in Nursing, behavior change communication or equivalent related fiel
• Significant professional experience, at least 3 years, managing IYCF Programs for international NGOs
• Excellent understanding of the mother-to-mother support group set up within the humanitarian aid context of Somaliland
• Clear understanding of the integration of IYCF into health and nutrition sectors and other thematic areas, including WASH, education and food security
• Proven capacity working with Ministry of health and other partners.
• Strong advocacy skills as well as communication skills both written and oral
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and negotiate clearly and effectively at all levels, considering cultural dynamics
• Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in a stressful and security sensitive environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
