BACKGROUND

Volunteers for Relief and Development is a registered local organizations working in humanitarian initiatives to respond to vulnerable communities by protracted droughts and conflicts in hard-to-reach areas of Somalia. The main objective of its establishment is reaching the underserved populations affected climatic shocks, drought and human made disaster. Volunteers for Relief and Development operates in Central and South of Somalia.

JOB SUMMARY
The position is based in Diinsoor, and the role of the Lab Technician is to support, coordinate, and implement laboratory activities for health projects, ensuring timely testing, accurate reporting, and adherence to quality standards. Key functions of this role include performing laboratory tests, monitoring sample collection and analysis, documenting results, assisting in maintaining lab equipment, and supporting data reporting in line with implementing partners’ and donor strategies. The role involves liaising with health authorities and field staff to improve health outcomes.

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Lab Technician will undertake the following duties and responsibilities, including:

• Conduct laboratory tests according to project protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Collect, label, transport, and process samples accurately and safely.
• Ensure proper storage, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
• Record and report laboratory results in a timely manner to project and health authorities.
• Assist in monitoring and ensuring quality control in all lab processes.
• Maintain an organized, clean, and safe laboratory environment.
• Support field staff in sample collection and preparation for laboratory testing.
• Document lab achievements and lessons learned for reporting and dissemination.
• Participate in community mobilization related to health testing campaigns.
• Coordinate with other health and implementing partners on laboratory activities.
• Participate in field assessments to support evidence-based health interventions.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in laboratory testing and diagnostics, preferably in a health project setting.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety, quality assurance, and standard operating procedures.
• Ability and willingness to travel to field locations under challenging conditions.
• Experience in working with non-profit or humanitarian health projects is preferred.
• Willingness to work in difficult environmental conditions.

REQUIRED COMPETENCE

• High professional discipline, moral integrity, and reliability.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Competent in computer applications: MS Word, Excel, and email reporting.
• Strong organizational and documentation skills.
• Ability to work under stress and with communities of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

The responsibilities of this position include regular contact with children, and young people. Volunteers for Relief and Development organization is responsible for protecting and safeguarding the dignity of children, women, and all vulnerable individuals, as well as raising awareness.
