Background

Volunteers for Relief and Development is a registered local organizations working humanitarian initiatives to respond to vulnerable communities by protracted droughts and conflicts in Somalia. The main objective of its establishment is reaching the unprivileged communities severing the natural calamities, shocks and manmade disaster

Lab Technician

Job Summary: the main purpose of the Laboratory Technician is to perform a variety of laboratory procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laboratory operations while adhering to quality and safety standards.

• Prepare specimens for analysis, ensuring proper labelling, handling, and storage to maintain sample integrity.
• Perform quality control procedures and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or procedural errors as needed.
• Document and report test results accurately, maintaining organized records in compliance with regulatory requirements and laboratory protocols.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers to communicate test results, interpret findings, and provide support for patient care decisions.
• Assist in inventory management, ordering supplies, and maintaining cleanliness and organization in the laboratory environment.
• Adhere to established protocols for infection control, biohazard waste management, and laboratory safety to ensure a safe working environment.

Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, techniques, and equipment operation.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures accurately.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.
• Computer skills (MS Word, excel, internet, computer based lab results ordering and reporting) Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

Required competence 

• A mature person of high professional discipline and moral integrity.
• Ability to English proficiency.
• Previous experience within a humanitarian aid organization, in particular working in primary health care programs and conducting nursing.
• Strong counselling skills.
• Good organizational skills.
• Competent to work under stress as the situation may dictate. Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic background.

Child Protection and safeguarding

The responsibilities of this position include regular contact with children, and young people. Volunteers for Relief and Development organization is responsible for protecting and safeguarding the dignity of children, women, and all vulnerable individuals, as well as raising awareness.
