Job Title: Matron

Background

In response to the critical health care needs in Sanaag, the Sanaag Healthcare Foundation established the Sanaag Speciality Hospital, a non-profit organisation located in Erigavo City, Somaliland. The first phase of the hospital development will be a 45 bed facility made up of A&E, OPD, Diagnostics, Maternity and Paediatric Health together with an Operating Theatre. The Hospital is operating almost 12 Months now.

To be a model referral hospital at the heart of eastern Somaliland’s healthcare system. Together with a network of integrated health facilities and outreach services, provide sustainable quality, health care amenities to the most remote, underserved populations in the country.

The Foundations and its community partners are focusing their capacity and resources on developing the Sanaag Speciality Hospital with the following strategic objectives.

Job Title: Matron

Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced and caring matron to join our hospital’s healthcare team to provide safe, effective, efficient care for patients, relatives and careers. The matron will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. The matron is expected to be able to implement and demonstrate procedures, mentor and supervise all medical personnel and lead the unit on a day to day basis.

Reporting: Directly to CMO or Medical Director

Primary responsibilities for the position include:

• Providing leadership to clinical and direct care staff within their unit, to ensure high standards of care.
• Ensuring that administrative and support services for their unit support the delivery of high standards of care, i.e. cleaning.
• Providing a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in wards for patients and their families.
• Carry out a full range of nurse duties, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient’s condition. Maintain the privacy and dignity of all patients whilst adhering to hospital policies, reporting any difficulties you have to the Medical Director
• Maintain a safe environment when caring for patients including patients requiring specialised monitoring and be able to recognise deterioration in a patient’s condition and escalate as required without delay
• Maintain accurate and legible records of care as directed by management
• Ensure effective communication with all levels of staff and foster good relationships with other departments and team members

Key Responsibilities:

• Management of the nursing team including delegation of work on a day to day basis
• Ensuring all nursing staff are trained and upskilled according to the needs of the hospital
• To develop an annual training plan and submit a training report every quarter
• Ensuring the necessary policies and procedures are in place and reviewed as required
• Monitor staff progression and identify any concerns as well as monitor responsibilities under the Health and Safety act and ensure faulty or damaged equipment are dealt with appropriately
• Be responsible for the control and administration of drugs as directed within the Hospital policies and ensure adherence by all other staff
• Patients, visitors and staff must be dealt with sensitively and professionally with due regard to culture, religion and sexual orientation and protection of patient’s rights
• Monitor the Health and Safety at Work Act reporting via the appropriate system any faulty or damaged equipment or practices in the ward or department that could be detrimental to the health and safety of patients and staff.
• Potential hazards in the workplace are recognised and dealt with within own capability or reported promptly as appropriate.
• In charge of the immunization / nutritional programmes including the community health outreach programmes.
• Participate in research and further educational opportunities as well as provide training for other team members on a regular basis
• Implement and oversee Quality Improvement Programs as required
• Induct new staff with a formal induction programme

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse with an appropriate degree in Nursing Management with at least 5 years of experience as a Senior Nurse in a Hospital.
• ICU Course. Would be an advantage
• Current BLS certification.
• Knowledge of clinical practices
• Experience of managing staff and their shifts
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Compassionate and caring for patients
• Able to work autonomously in an intense, concentrated environment
• Good leadership skills; able to mentor and educate
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Excellent communication and management skills
• Preference/desire to work in Erigavo
• Computer skills, including Word, Excell and Powerpoint
