Background
Volunteers for Relief and Development is a registered local organizations working humanitarian initiatives to respond to vulnerable communities by protracted droughts and conflicts in Somalia. The main objective of its establishment is reaching the unprivileged communities severing the natural calamities, shocks and manmade disaster.
Job Summary
This job creation is aimed at building an emergency health team to quickly respond to the dire health needs of people affected by the climate change.
Conducts outpatient clinics.
- Participates in outreach clinics.
- Carries out minor and major surgery Participate in the preparation of monthly medical activity reports for inclusion in the monthly situation report.
- Participates in co-ordination and representation activities at field level.
- Participates in training programs in order to improve his or her skills.
- Participates in the assessment of the medical needs of the community.
- Participates in the recruitment and supervision of locally recruited health personnel.
- Participates in the training of all medical staff and local partner staff to ensure the maximum use of their skills and their full and effective participation in medical activities
- Together with other project personnel responsible for encouraging community participation in health activities to ensure the long term ownership and effectiveness of the programme.
- Conducts any other activity requested by his or her immediate supervisor
- Supervises health personnel under his/her management.
- Together with nurse in charge of ward responsible for submitting requests for medicines and medical supplies to hospital medical store.
- Together with nurse in charge of hospital ward responsible for ensuring appropriate patient care.
- Actively participates in department or ward staff meetings.
- Assists surgeon to carry out major surgery
Qualifications:
- Degree of Medicine and Surgery from a recognized university.
- Excellent management and personnel skills to enable the motivation, encouragement and participation of national health team members
- Ability and flexibility to understand the cultural and political environment and to work well with local health personnel
- Ability to work with a team while developing and implementing programs.
- Ability to assess evolving health needs quickly and calmly under pressure as required.
- Computer skills (MS Word, excel, internet, computer based lab results ordering and reporting) Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Required competence
- A mature person of high professional discipline and moral integrity.
- Excellent communication skills, with good spoken and written English and experience in report writing.
- Previous experience within a humanitarian aid organization, in particular working in primary health care programs and conducting nursing.
- Strong counselling skills.
- Good computer skills to allow reporting and representation
- Good organizational skills.
- Competent to work under stress as the situation may dictate. Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic background.

The responsibilities of this position include regular contact with children, and young people. Volunteers for Relief and Development organization is responsible for protecting and safeguarding the dignity of children, women, and all vulnerable individuals, as well as raising awareness.
