At the end of 2019, the Foundation started its Pharo Ventures franchise to prioritise sectors where the Foundation believes a real impact can be made by establishing self- sustaining businesses that focus on job and economic value creation.

Recognising health as a key theme and aspect of human and economic development, the Foundation implements programmes that aim at increasing access and quality of health care, focusing on health infrastructure improvement and capacity enhancement for health professionals.

Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational Head Office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali) with further expansion plans in East Africa.

Position Summary

We are looking to recruit an experienced Medical Doctor to work in the Pharo Medical Center. The successful candidate will be expected to apply medical knowledge and skills for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and accidents, that commonly occur in a busy clinical environment. The candidate will work collaboratively with other professionals across the Medical Center.

Job Title: Medical Doctor.

Reports to: Health Coordinator.

Functional Relationships: Country Representative (Hargeisa, Somaliland) & Director of Health (Nairobi, Kenya) and Health Team.

Job Location: Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Contract: Fixed Term (One year with a possibility of extension).

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Provides high-quality care to patients on outpatient and inpatient basis.

Responds to patients’ medical/health problems by referring to their history and carrying out diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral as appropriate.

Discusses side effects, best conditions for use, and possible interactions of medication.

Assists in the management of the procurement of drugs, medical equipment, consumables and

medical supplies through the system contracts.

Reports adverse outcomes in patients in a timely manner.

Responds to inquiries from patients, and underwriters regarding the clinical management of their

patients.

Responsible for reviewing all high-profile cases daily and proactively managing their care.

Takes responsibility for the clinical decision-making of the Medical Center on a day-to-day basis. Ensures availability of medical supplies and proper functioning of all medical equipment in the

Medical Center.

Ensures that the nursing team is supported in their clinical activities and are provided with timely, consistent and accurate medical information.

Provides continuous on-job training, mentoring and coaching for nurses, midwives and other

medical staff in clinical skills and good patient care.

Acts as a point of referral for internal and external medical queries.

Refers cases to an appointed specialist, that are outside their areas of expertise.

Ensures that medical ethics and clinical governance procedure is appropriately complied with and that breaches are reported.

Undertakes audit in conjunction with the requirements of the Ministry of Health. Organises and participates in ongoing CPD programs.

Any other duties assigned by the Line Manager.

Qualification Requirements

An undergraduate degree in Medicine and Surgery (MB.BS or MD) or its equivalent from a

registered and reputable university.

A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience working as a medical doctor in a busy clinical facility. Must have a valid license to practice medicine.

Excellent patient management skills. Knowledge of medical ethics.

Extensive knowledge of medical recordkeeping standards.

Advanced ability to ensure the highest standards in patient care and compliance with healthcare

regulations.

Strong writing and excellent communication skills in English and Somali.

Ability to supervise a team of nurses and other auxiliary medical personnel.

Ability to be creative and innovative in generating new ideas and undertaking research.

High level of professionalism, work ethics, integrity and data collection analysis and reporting. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

The ability to obtain complex medical information from those whose first language may not be

English.

The ability to work as a pivotal member of a team comprising medical and non-medical colleagues. The ability to maintain a compassionate and understanding approach even under pressure.

To be able to make rapid assessments of risk and start treatment, transfer, or other remote

intervention.

To be able to communicate their decisions and the reasoning behind them to the patient and

other parties.

To develop an understanding of the commercial and corporate structures and operations of our clients.

Salary and Benefits

The salary and benefits package is competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Medical Insurance is provided in accordance with The Pharo Foundation Health Policy.
