6.    Job Role Summary:

Provide comprehensive advice, care and support to women and their babies during pregnancy, labour and early postnatal period. Conduct a clean, safe delivery and provide care to the newborn. Refer emergency cases to effectively prevent maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in compliance with MOH health policy guidelines and established midwifery care standards and treatment protocols.

Factor Essential Added Advantage
Professional/ Academic Degree / Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery Knowledge of physiological, psychological and processes of pregnancy and birth.
Relevant Work 3 to 4 years of experience in the provision of midwifery services and maternal and child health care.
8.    Specific duties & responsibilities Job Responsibilities

§   Diagnose, examine, monitor and assess care requirements for women during labour and prepare a care plan for childbirth, including advice on hygiene, breastfeeding and nutrition.

§   Identify women with greater vulnerability and risks and refer them to a specialised care provider.

§   Provide information, emotional support and reassurance to women in labour and their partners.

§   Monitor and administer medication, injections and intravenous infusions during labour.

§   Provide support to women during labour and birth to ensure normal delivery of the newborn.

§   Support parents to cope with miscarriage, termination, stillbirth and neonatal death.

§   Manage complications in childbirth according to the principles of obstetric care.

§   Monitor the mother’s progress during the postnatal period and advise on infant care.

§   Raise requisitions to replenish drugs and consumable supplies for childbirth and care.

§   Compile accurate data on all childbirth cases and prepare monthly reports.

§   Liaise with SOLO outreach health and nutrition team and other social care experts within the area of operation to ensure continuum care.

§   On request, perform any additional duties or instructions given by the midwife.

9.    Essential skills: §   Work experience as a midwife, preferably in a non-profit setting.

§   Strong working knowledge of English and Somali (spoken and written).

§   Ability to uphold quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.

§   Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and exercise judgment

§   Ability to prioritisation and time management

§   Compassionate, calm and patient-centre
