BACKGROUND

Volunteers for Relief and Development is a registered local organizations working in humanitarian initiatives to respond to vulnerable communities by protracted droughts and conflicts in hard-to-reach areas of Somalia. The main objective of its establishment is reaching the underserved populations affected climatic shocks, drought and human made disaster. Volunteers for Relief and Development operates in Central and South of Somalia.

JOB SUMMARY
The position is based in Diinsoor, and the role of the Qualified Midwife is to provide maternal and newborn health services, supporting project implementation and ensuring quality care for women and infants. Key functions include providing antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, monitoring maternal and newborn health indicators, documenting clinical activities, and liaising with health authorities and field staff to improve maternal and child health outcomes.

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Qualified Midwife will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:

• Provide skilled antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care according to national guidelines and project protocols.
• Conduct health education and counseling for pregnant women, mothers, and families.
• Monitor maternal and newborn health indicators and maintain accurate patient records.
• Assist in community mobilization to promote safe motherhood and maternal health awareness.
• Ensure proper use, storage, and management of maternal and newborn medical supplies.
• Support field staff in implementing maternal and child health interventions.
• Document achievements, lessons learned, and contribute to reporting for project monitoring.
• Coordinate with other health service providers and implementing partners for integrated maternal health services.
• Participate in assessments to identify gaps in maternal and newborn health services.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree or diploma in Midwifery with registration from the relevant professional council.
• Minimum 2 years of practical experience in maternal and newborn care.
• Knowledge of antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, including emergency obstetric care.
• Ability and willingness to work in field locations under challenging conditions.
• Experience with non-profit or humanitarian health projects is preferred.
• Commitment to maternal and newborn health quality standards and safe practices.

REQUIRED COMPETENCE

• High professional discipline, moral integrity, and reliability.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Competent in computer applications: MS Word, Excel, and email reporting.
• Strong organizational and counseling skills.
• Ability to work under stress and with communities of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFEGUARDING

The responsibilities of this position include regular contact with children, and young people. Volunteers for Relief and Development organization is responsible for protecting and safeguarding the dignity of children, women, and all vulnerable individuals, as well as raising awareness.
