A Starter Seed Company Looking for a Plant Breeder

Background:

HornAgro is a seed company whose foundation are drawn from various agricultural disciplines (food security, climate resilience, agri-finance, agri-tech, policy development, etc) working together towards wholesome solutions to challenges encountered in agricultural systems in Horn of Africa. The company is founded on the premise that agriculture is a system, a set of interconnected components working together as a complex whole. This realization has enabled us to tailor practical and effective solutions that address the unique complexities of different agricultural sectors enabling its participants to realize their full productivity and value.

Key Roles and Responsibilities/Technical Skills

o Demonstrate understanding of the Company Business Plan and Strategic Plan and breed the

company core crops to produce varieties of high quality and desirable traits which feed into the National and Regional seed markets;
o Show demonstrated skills in the development and maintenance of Breeders’ Seed in order to bulky the same to Basic Seed which can be used by the company in the production of Commercial Seed. This should be done seamlessly without any oversupply or undersupply of the

seed classes in the early generation seed (EGS) value chain;

o Demonstrate evidence of forecasting of the EGS seed classes in order guarantee the right and timely volumes of the respective seed classes to avoid the market disappointments in the

delivery of timely and correct volumes of commercial seed;

o Demonstrate ability to ensure that the varieties you develop for the market contain both

agronomic and farmer preferred traits to enhance market appeal;

o Show evidence of statistical designs and modes of data analysis skills and overall data management to guarantee visible biological qualities of the varieties offered to the market;

o Show demonstrable evidence of starting breeding work from the market place and working backwards to develop relevant and desirable varieties;
o Clearly demonstrate the ability to manage, support and train technical and field staff

o Demonstrate your ability to scout for cutting edge and fast-moving, science and translate ideas from scientific literature into new approaches to solve breeding problems;

o Show good problem-solving and flexible approach skills; o Show computer literacy and technical skills.
o Follow up, track crop and variety activities and address any bottlenecks and de-bottleneck accordingly to avoid hurting the business adversely.

o Developing communication briefs to assist the board with planning;

o Organize peer learning sessions, experience sharing and scale up to grow the business. o

Educational qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Plant Breeding with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (BBA) or a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from a recognized University. A Master’s in Plant Breeding with more than 5 years of experience gained in a seed company will also be considered.

Work experience:

o • 5+ years of experience in plant breeding for a seed business;

o • Experience with fundraising and partnership development will be an added advantage; o • Well-rounded experience in EGS production;

o Well-rounded experience in data collection and management, data analysis and development reports for the Board;

o • Experience working with international donors and non-profit industry associations. o • Willingness to travel up to 10% time.

o See that an effective support team, with appropriate skills and experience are, in place;

o Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates your team members.
