Role Purpose:

Under the general guidance of the FSL Program Officer, the Environmental assistant will directly work with communities to implement DRSLP-II PROJECT FSL interventions in Gardo and Badhan districts including VSLA and Environmental activities. CHILD SAFEGUARDING:

Level 3:  the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Community mobilization and project set up

  • Project assistants will be the key frontline staff of Save the Children in the field with direct interaction with the communities.
  • Organize community public meetings and facilitate selection of project Village Relief Committees (VRCs).
  • Conduction community mobilization, sensitization and establishment of VSLA groups in collaboration with women leaders in the project target locations at the beginning of the project.
  • In collaboration with the project officers or Deputy Program Manager, conduct project awareness activities with local authorities.
  • In collaboration with the project officers or DPM, work with communities to develop beneficiary selection criteria and facilitate the committees to identify project beneficiaries in the targeted communities.
  • Conduct beneficiaries’ verification processes for all project activities at project target locations.
  • Create community sensitisation and awareness on Natural Resource Management (NRM).

Project implementation

  • Ensure timely implementation of planned interventions, as per the work plan, budgetary standards and quality benchmarks for the FSL sector.
  • Ensure the quality benchmarks for project mobilization and sensitization are met during the project implementation and setup.
  • Train established groups on VSLA methodologies and provide basic Literacy and Numeracy sessions for them.
  • Provide ongoing mentoring sessions to VSLA groups to help them become independent and self-governing with strong leaderships.
  • Support the established VSLA groups to develop agreed constitution articles and ensure their adherence to the agreed constitutions.
  • Liaise with government partners and communities in the identification of the sites on NRM.
  • Work with the MEAL to set up project complaint response mechanism (CRM) at field level.

Data collection and management

  • Collect project data on registration, assessments, baselines, post distribution monitoring surveys etc.
  • Assist project officers in data entry as per request and requirement.
  • Ensuring the quality of data provided during the data collection at the field level.
  • Conduct Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to avoid negative impact of projects on the environment.
  • Undertake any other data related duties as assigned by the line manager.

Project monitoring and reporting

  • Monitor the day to day project activities in the field, as specified in the project activity plan.
  • Provide the officers or the Deputy Programme Manager with assessment reports from the field.
  • Provide Weekly Progress Update Report as requested by the FSL officer or Deputy Program Manager.
  • In collaboration with the project officers, participate in collection of case studies to demonstrate project impact.
  • Supervise the construction of sand dunes and ensure that the pre-determined size and spacing of them is observed.

Capacity building

  • Deliver any project trainings at the community level using agreed training protocols and methodologies.
  • Conduct regular meetings to capacity build, mentor, assist and supervise beneficiaries on case management basis, ensuring constant communication with all the beneficiaries.
  • Develop trust, tolerance and co-operation among beneficiary community members and local leaders.
  • Encourage and stimulate full participation by all community members; with special attention to those who are often forgotten, including, the disabled women and children, in community decision making.
  • Assist the community members in developing their own capacity and strength.
  • Any other duties as directed by the FSL Project Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCEEssential

•       Diploma/Degree in Business Administration, Community development, Environmental studies and any other relevant experience in microfinance, livelihoods, IGA and VSLA methodology.

•       Prior experience in Emergency Food Security and Livelihood projects is desirable.

•       Ability to read and write in English.

•       Computer skills, with focus on word processing and excel.

•       Strong morals including, honesty, transparency, generosity, altruism and respect.

•       Experience in working in harsh environment would be an added advantage.
