Background

Volunteers for Relief and Development is a registered local organizations working humanitarian initiatives to respond to vulnerable communities by protracted droughts and conflicts in Somalia. The main objective of its establishment is reaching the unprivileged communities severing the natural calamities, shocks and manmade disaster

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keeps accurate EPI records including daily and permanent registers, and additional records missed cases and defaulters (prepare and update lists on a monthly basis).
  • Keeps accurate records/charts of monitoring coverage of the patients in the clinic and target population.
  • Closely liaise with fixed facility health workers, and other outreach staff, health promoters, community health workers.
  • Screen cards for immunization of children to avoid missed opportunities, follow up trace defaulters 
  • Coordinates proper birth recording/reporting and growth monitoring activities in the facilities with the teams.
  • Keep and maintains accurate Expanded Programme for immunization (EPI) records such as daily register and permanent registers, and prepare the monthly records of missed cases and defaulters.
  • Provide counseling and guidance to care givers on the preventative and curative health aspects of the vaccines, vaccination schedules.
  • Receives vaccines from the field office/UNICEF Depot and ensures that the cold chain is correctly maintained to the point of actual immunization in accordance to standardized guidelines.
  • Prepares monthly statistical report, vaccine consumption/wastage rates and submits in timely manner.
  • Ensures that used syringes, needles and all vaccinations vials/ampoules are stored and disposed off per protocols.
  • Co-ordinate with health promoters on regular basis for defaulter tracing and participate in health education session.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing from a recognized university 
  • Ready to work in difficult environmental conditions.
  • Experience in maternal and child health or equivalent qualifications
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience in a health program set up.
  • Experience working with a non-profit humanitarian organization preferred.
  • Flexibility at work.

Required competence 

  • A mature person of high professional discipline and moral integrity.
  • Ability to English proficiency.
  • Previous experience within a humanitarian aid organization, in particular working in primary health care programs and conducting nursing.
  • Strong counselling skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Competent to work under stress as the situation may dictate. Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic background.
  • Computer skills (MS Word, excel, internet, computer based lab results ordering and reporting) Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
