Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Part of the Strategic Partnerships Division (SPD), the Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships and Advisory Services (MPAS) Section leads UN Women’s engagement with the private sector, corporations, philanthropy, foundations, and individuals – both in terms of a substantive components and resource mobilization – and it drives a wide range of UN Women’s global initiatives: HeForShe, Women Entrepreneurship Accelerator (WEA), Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and Unstereotype Alliance (UA). It also leads the work with all UN Women National Committees, and on the development of the individual/digital giving as well as Advisory Services business line for private sector. MPAS’ main aims are to ensure that UN Women develops and sustains high quality and impact focused partnerships to achieve maximum results for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Under direct guidance of the Chief of MPAS and in close collaboration with all relevant UN Women Teams and external stakeholders – this consultancy will deliver a Private Sector Through the Gender Lens: State of the Field Report. The report will be based on a desk review of all available documents as well as research specifically tailored for this purpose. It will serve as background and context for the development of UN Women’s Private Sector Partnerships and Involvement Strategy 2023-2025.

MPAS Team will provide/suggest all relevant materials which the consultant will review, analyze, and summarize during the desk review process, together with her/his own tailored research of any other literature identified as relevant for the analysis and writing of the report. The final deliverable- Private Sector through the Gender Lens: State of the Field Report – will be presented in a format of a coherent document that clearly identifies the global realities, key challenges and opportunities for the future of UN Women’s work and engagement with private sector in line with its current Strategic Plan goals and financial targets.

Duties and Responsibilities

Deliverables:

Under direct guidance of the Chief of MPAS the selected candidate will:

  • Carry out a full desk review of all relevant documents to provide a background for the overall understanding of the state of the field and challenges/opportunities in the development and implementation of UN Women’s Private Sector Partnerships and Engagement Strategy 2023-2025.
  • Prepare a short inception plan for approaching the analysis and report write-up, including an outline of the report’s structure, and planned sub-sections, definition of key concepts used and framework for the challenges and opportunities for validation with UN Women team.
  • Arrange and facilitate in-depth interviews and consultations with all relevant partners and stakeholders including UN Women existing private sector partners and donors, UN agencies, UN Women teams, including all Regional Offices, which will inform and shape the process of development and content of the report.
  • Review input from stakeholders and prepare an analysis as relevant for development of the report for meetings and discussions with UN Women Teams as well as for inclusion in any subsequent draft version/s of the report.
  • Following one round of consultation and comments from the team, the consultant will produce a first draft of the report   – taking into account feedback from all teams — as per the agreed outline and not to exceed 20 pages (excluding annexes)
  • Review final input from all stakeholders and revise the first draft as needed.
  • Deliver final version of the Private Sector Through the Gender Lens: State of the Field Report.

  • Excellent English writing and communication and analytical skills are required

Required Skills and Experience

Education and certification:  

Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Political or Social Science, Economics, International Development Studies, Gender/Women’s Studies is required.

Experience:  

  • At least 10 years of proven experience in international level research directly relevant to private sector and human rights, data collection and analysis as well as developing and writing documents based on a solid assessments and evaluations with a specific focus on  gender equality;
  • Solid knowledge of and experience in working on human rights legal frameworks with a gender responsive approach to programming and issues related to gender equality;
  • Proven experience in writing for an international audience and producing clearly written and well-articulated analysis papers, briefs and reports;
  • Previous experience of working in and with the United Nations system on similar project is in an asset;
  • Field experience is highly desirable.

Language Requirements: 

  • Fluency in English is required
