About the Program
Action Against Hunger-USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and food security. Action Against Hunger-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in seven countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Haiti and Somalia. Action Against Hunger-USA has approximately 1,500 staff based in the various country offices, Head Quarter in New York City and Operational Centre in Nairobi. Additional growth is anticipated.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Safeguarding, Gender and Inclusion Manager will be responsible for providing strategic and systematic support on implementation of gender responsive programs as well as spearhead gender program development across Somalia Mission. S/he will work with Action Against Hunger staff to ensure gender mainstreaming in our programs and Lead country office efforts to ensure Safeguarding is prioritized and considered in programming and operations.Safeguarding, Gender and Inclusion Manager will work in partnership with HEARO, Action Against Hunger across the international network including the Safeguarding Community of Practice and CHS Working Group line ministries, county authorities and different donors namely GAC, BHA, FCDO, SIDA, ECHO, just to mention a few—in championing gender in program design and delivery. The Safeguarding, Gender and Inclusion Manager will also focus on capacity building for the program and support teams plus partners to ensure gender mainstreaming in the organization and provide gender related reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements
KEY ACTIVITIES IN YOUR ROLE WILL INCLUDE:
- Take lead in development, management, and implementation of gender-focused and gender integration activities for all program components.
- Contribute to the development of Safeguarding IEC and awareness raising materials for staff and communities
- Participate in the Action Against Hunger international network Safeguarding Community of Practice and ensure information, resources and notifications are shared onward with other relevant team members
- Support the establishment of complaint response mechanisms and reporting processes to ensure safe, confidential and accessible channels are available for safeguarding/PSEA Trainings.
- Lead on the review of any new proposal or project revision document to ensure safeguarding considerations are included
- Promote institutionalization to influence workplace culture and prioritize organizational commitment to Safeguarding
- Provide support to program unit to conduct risk assessments and mitigation plans to ensure safer programmingProvide support to design mitigating and corrective measures, including incorporating safeguarding protocols into programs and operations
- Prepare quality and timely donor reports as per the Action Against Hunger and donor reporting requirements.
- Take lead in programming, integration of risk mitigation into program design; establish CRMs accountability and community engagement.
- Provide analysis and strategic advice at country office on current gender issues, opportunities and gender upcoming events i.e. 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence.
- Promote knowledge sharing, documentation and dissemination of good practices on gender equality, women’s empowerment and rights, motivate, and engage peers to share ideas and engage with the Gender Agenda.
- Advocate with donors and other partners including governments for support of gender related activities including gender mainstreaming in respective program/project delivery.
- Support resource mobilization efforts for Action Against Hunger Somalia mission and ensure that gender is effectively mainstreamed in all project full cycle.
- Support Implementing Partners efforts to comply with AAH’s Safeguarding Policy and commitments, including participation in capacity assessments and development of capacity development plans to strengthen systems
- Develop and maintain positive strategic working relations with a wide network of partners, including Government, partners, NGOs and representing Action Against Hunger at NGO Forum PSEA Working Group and GBV Sub Cluster.

- Take lead in Country Office to maintain the Gender Minimum Standard (GSM).
- Facilitate the transfer of gender information and updates between the Gender Task Force and Somalia country office.
- Take lead in capacity building of County staff in consolidating, validating and analyzing of data disaggregated by sex, age and other diversities.
- With the support of the Gender Focal Points for each operational base, build and promote internal capabilities and collaboration in mainstreaming gender within Action Against Hunger Programs
DOES THIS DESCRIPTION FIT YOU?
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Anthropology, Gender and Development Studies or other Social Sciences related discipline.
- Solid understanding and commitment to humanitarian principles including the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS).
- Knowledge of international standards and best practice related to Safeguarding, PSEA, GBV and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) commitments.
- Experience working with Child Protection/Safeguarding related programs
- Experience in beneficiary protection from abuse and exploitation in development and humanitarian contexts and knowledge of international protection frameworks and safeguarding mechanisms
- Knowledge of main donor requirements in terms of gender integration including GAC, BHA, FCDO, SIDA, ECHO, among others.
- Experience in program or project design
- Minimum 6 years work experience on similar position with similar setting and responsibility
