The Pharo Secondary School, Sheikh is a boarding school located in the Sahil Region of Somaliland. The school is situated in the town of Sheikh between the port city of Berbera and Burcoa in the interior of Somaliland. It has a pleasant cool climate all year round due to its high altitude. The school is renowned for its academic excellence and secure and caring environment in which students of all abilities can experience success and achieve their full potential within a broad and balanced curriculum. The aim is to prepare students to become respectful contributing members of the communities in which they live. The school counts many prominent politicians and other key officials among its graduates.
The school has students from Form 1 to Form 4 with school facilities that consist of 10 classrooms, science laboratories, library, assembly and lecture halls, boys’ dormitories and girls’ hostel, dining hall and a clinic. The school is currently following the Edexcel International curriculum; London University based IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), and the Somaliland National Curriculum.
With a modern campus and with students from all over the country and all socio-economic backgrounds being represented, dedicated teams of teachers at the School seek to rapidly accelerate student learning
while building confidence, creativity and critical thinking skills. The school’s goal is to see each student pursue post-secondary education and become leaders and role models in their respective communities.
Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational Head Office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali) with further expansion plans in East Africa.
Position summary
Position: Secondary School Nurse
Reporting to: The Principal
Location: Sheikh, Somaliland
Contract Type: Fixed Term (one year)
We are currently looking for a talented Nurse who is concerned about the health of students. She/he will be responsible to deliver exceptional healthcare services to our students during scheduled overnight work hours. The position combines office evening hours with on call overnight hours from 7:00pm-7:00am. The school Nurse will support the learning experience of our boarding students by developing and implementing health-related policies and procedures in alignment with our mission and vision. This will include, performing and interpreting health screenings, medical examinations, and by assessing students’ health needs such as administering emergency care and first aid treatment. The Nurse will be providing health counselling and addressing the physical, mental, and social health needs of students. The Nurse will provide a safe and healthy environment in order to maximize students’ potential to learn and succeed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Deliver high-quality nursing care to the school community
Assuming responsibility for and ensuring that proper provision is made for any student in the school who feels unwell. This will include carrying out the appropriate medical assessment of the student and treatment as necessary, in a triage role, including contact with parents/guardians and teaching staff. The Nurse will be responsible for the supervision of the student until the parents are available to look after them.
Assessing the extent of more serious injuries and organizing the provision of medical treatment, including liaising with parents /guardians.
Evaluate the health status of students at the assigned school by performing health screenings, tests, and physical examinations (i.e. vision, hearing, dental, scoliosis, and blood pressure) and interpret/communicate findings to students, parents/guardians, and school personnel.
Provide direct nursing care to students and staff by administering medication, immunizations, first aid, emergency health care, and nursing care prescribed by a medical provider; and accompany students to the hospital as necessary.
Observe students on a regular basis to monitor illness and provide early detection of communicable diseases, child abuse, substance abuse, mental illness, depression, eating disorders, chronic illness, and physical defects; make referrals to other professional staff members and community agencies as needed; and communicate findings to parents/guardians as appropriate.
To provide appropriate care and supervision of sick students within the boarding accommodation. Report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect through the proper channels.
Enforce established infection control policies and procedures on the exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious diseases.
Serve as a resource to teachers and staff at the assigned school regarding the health needs of students and recommend modifications of the student’s educational program/environment as necessary.
Act as health advisor to students’ resident in boarding accommodation and offer support to boarding staff.
Maintain proper documentation and health records of all students within the assigned school, prepare/submit reports as required.
Requisition supplies and equipment needed for the health clinic at the assigned school.
Qualification Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
Must have graduated from an accredited school of professional nursing with some work experience as a Nurse.
Must have knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, and techniques within a school environment to include knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, child growth/development, basic pharmacology, medical terminology, and infection control measures.
Must possess skills in standard nursing procedures and the ability to perform/interpret health screenings and physical examinations.
Must possess the ability to maintain comprehensive health records, prepare clear/concise medical reports and use appropriate computer systems.
Must be first aid and CPR trained.
Must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to drive a vehicle.
