SBACO profile

Somali Birth Attendants Cooperative Organization (SBACO) is a non-profit organization based in Somalia. It was founded in 1994 in Gal kayo city of Mudug region by a team of healthcare workers and senior community development professionals who saw the need to take care of the escalating humanitarian needs in the country.

Currently, SBACO is involved in several humanitarian programs with focus on key sectors that includes Sexual and Reproductive health, Child Protection, Livelihood Food Security, Health and Nutrition, Women empowerment and gender mainstreaming, among others. We are currently involved in active projects that aim to address maternal mortality and GBV harmful practices in humanitarian setting. We are in partnership with UN Agencies, INGOs, Government institutions, Local Community Networks, Consortiums and community volunteers in these projects and seek the services of qualified professionals.

Job Description

The Social Mobilizer is responsible for promoting awareness on gender-based violence, options for referral pathways and availability of GBV one stop center services and women and girls’ safe spaces in the local community. The Social Mobilizer will oversee the FCDO Project activities of GBV workers and provide technical support to achieve project outcomes.

Key responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the Social Mobilizer will include the following.

1. Vulnerable Outreach Communities visits

The Social Mobiliser is responsible for directly assisting vulnerable women and girls in the communities. His/her duties include:

• Conduct outreach activities to vulnerable Somali population in relevant areas of GBV and maternal welfare.
• Regularly update the Project Manager regarding the humanitarian situation in the assigned communities on a daily basis.
• Assist in the distribution of dignity and maternal health kits or other programmatic materials where required.
• Active training and awareness campaign in targeted communities using a variety of communication methods

2. Coordination

• Assist to coordinate the team effort of conducting field visits and planning of intervention activities in VOCs.
• Assist the implementation of intervention activities (GBV and PSS) and make specific recommendations on vulnerabilities and internal referrals where appropriate.
• Assist informal education and anti-GBV promotion activities as required in the field.

4. Regular communication

• Participate in weekly team meetings.
• Attend regular community meetings in targeted areas.
• Advocate with service providers for the inclusion of vulnerable families in to relevant program intervention activities.
• Coordinate with other programs serving women and girls and asylum-seekers that may be complementary.
• Establish good and regular communication with project beneficiaries, SBACO partners and various service providers.
• Establish good communication and coordination with all relevant SBACO departments.
• Strictly follow the SBACO internal procedures and guidelines.

5. Provide training and support to Syrian volunteers

Engage SBACO Staff and community residents to implement interventions.

6. Reporting

• The Social Mobilizer is responsible for preparing accurate, honest, and timely reports of their individual activities (GBV, PSS, and MH). This includes maintaining signed records of the engagement and activities with the community.
• The Social Mobilizer is also encouraged to prepare written reports of the results of their activities, assessments and observations.

Qualification of candidate

• Certification in social work, community health, humanities, or related field
• At least one year experience working in community settings in a development and/or humanitarian context
• Experience working with several stakeholders across a number of different projects.
• Experience in security management, preferably in a humanitarian context
• Fluent Somali language, fluent spoken English and ability to communicate in English (reading and writing)
• Familiarity with the Somali culture, ability to communicate respectfully, sensitively and effectively with the affected population, especially women and girls.
• Experience with assessment and monitoring
• Good communication skills and ability and willingness to work with people in difficult personal circumstances
• Respectful and appropriate attitude towards the vulnerable community.

Additional details

Position holder will be reporting to the Program Manager

Duty Station: Beletweyne, Somalia,

Travel to the field is expected on a regular basis

The position is a six (6) months contract
