Project Name:     Strengthening Last Miles through Innovative Livelihood Enterprise (SMILE)

Funded by:           IR USA

Location:             Afgooye district

Introduction and background

IRS is currently implementing an emergency and developmental projects in Afgooye district, such projects include SMILE project which is an agricultural project that helps farmers with agricultural support (input) such as seeds, farm plowing, irrigation canal rehabilitation and agricultural training to improve crop production.

Through this project, IR plans to support Afgooye small scale and vulnerable farmers to establish two demonstration farms/plots for learning agricultural practices and technology and two nurseries for fruit and plantation to thousands of farmers and improve knowledge of farmers through practical teaching (demonstrations) farmers how to improve farmers’ capacity through skills development and business linkages and increase farm productivity through adoption of improved agricultural technologies and practices and hence will enhance and improve community resilience through build back better preparedness & response

Objectives of the nurseries beds’ establishment

A standard nursery is where the seeds are germinated and the seedlings are grown until they reach the appropriate age for permanent planting in the field and/or asexual propagation has to be established and managed, and its objective distribute aged fruit seedlings to farmers to increase their farm productivity and build sustainable livelihoods for poor and vulnerable agro-pastoralist and small scale farmers in Afgooye district. The nursery beds will be used for practical teaching farmers and conducting agricultural demonstrations, field days and trainings, and the Nurseries will be used for; 3000 farmer HHs (6000 individuals/indirect beneficiaries)

Outcomes of the nursery: What do you want to see when this activity is accomplished?

NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT

Identification of the site and Criteria of site selection

  1. Soil: Soil must be arable loosen well drained, rich in organic matter and should respond well to fertilizer and manure. Sandy loam and/or loamy soils preferably with high humus content and pH between 5.5 and 6.5
  2. Water: The site must be located near water source to facilitate daily watering. The total amount of water a tree receives will affects it’s cropping and fruit quality.
  3. TopographyThe ground must be flat less than 3%of slop and accessible to sunlight.
  4. Accessibility: The site must be located near the road to facilitate the transportation of nursery equipment and seedlings.
  5. Wind: The nursery must not be exposed to the strong wind otherwise wind-breaks will be installed.

Site preparation

  1. a) Site clearing

Consist of cutting grasses, shrubs and trees trunks. In addition to clearing the ground vegetation in the forest nursery site, it is advisable to fell and remove all big trees inside and outside the site that might interfere with future nursery operations and seedling growth.

  1. b) Tillage methods

It consist of initial/first plowing in order to remove roots and tree stumps followed by a second/deeper plowing where large clods are broken to give the fine seedbed.

  1. c) Leveling procedure

It is done by using rate to remove the remaining small clods, stones and some weeds and to limit water stagnation by giving the site or the bed the same level.

Design the nursery

Drawing

Figure 1. Seed bed layout

Construction

Selecting equipment

  1. Pole timbers of 10-15cm of diameter
  2. Sticks (Cross beams) of 5-7cm of diameter
  3. Slabs for formwork (in the absence of slabs, pole timbers may be used for formwork)

Pole size

  1. Construction of a nursery starts with fixing 4 poles at each end to get a well-built nursery.
  2. After fixing the 4 poles, we proceed with the establishment of cross beams.
  3. Poles must be solid and have the following length:

Poles must be of 1.30m (30cm are in the ground) starting from the ground on the first end and1.25m (30cm are in the ground) on the second so that there is a small slope facilitating the rain water flow that can damage seedlings if stagnate on the roof.

Seedling bed form work or coffering

Form work supports seedling bed and pots. Locally available materials namely stones burnt bricks, Bamboo, poles, slabs crowns etc. Can be used.

Those materials can be directly deposited well-straight on the ground or using small pickets to strengthen the formwork.

Species selection

When the best possible information has been collected on the characteristics of the site to be planted, the next step is the selection of the tree or shrub species to plant. The aim is to choose species which are suited to the site, will remain healthy throughout the anticipated rotation, will produce acceptable growth and yield, and will meet the objectives of the plantation (fuelwood production, protection, etc.)

For a successful planting, performance data may have to be extrapolated from one locality to another. Results from a locality where a tree or shrub species is growing (either naturally or as an exotic) strictly apply only to that locality; their application in another locality involves the assumption of site comparability, an assumption which may or may not be justified. When reliable information shows a close similarity between the site to be planted and that on which the species is already successful, it is generally possible to proceed to large-scale planting with confidence.

Activities plan (calendar)

A nursery calendar is an essential tool in nursery planning. The date for sowing seeds can be calculated by counting backwards from the anticipated date of planting, taking into consideration the number of days needed for germination and further seedling development until the right stage for planting. Different species have different requirements for the planting out period (before or during the rains).

The time in the nursery also depends on the site on which the seedlings are to be planted. Seedlings for drier sites may need to be larger and need more time in the nursery.

Perform the sowing

Sowing of seeds should therefore be carried out within one to two weeks after seed collection. It should be carried out early in the morning or late in the evening. In cases where seeds are scarce and difficult to obtain, careful handling of the seeds is necessary in order to reduce seed damage and to obtain a higher germination percentage.

During sowing, the seeds should be spaced out properly in order to avoid overlapping. The spacing will normally depend very much on the seed size.

The seed beds should be covered with wire-mesh netting to protect the sown seeds from birds and rodents.

Fencing

Construct a fence around the nursery bed to protect it from livestock and wild animals browse or graze on seedlings. Fencing can offset this.

It can prevent stealing or intentional damaging of seedlings by human beings. Fencing and security are such options to overcome this.
