An estimated 8.2 million trees were cut down for charcoal in Somalia between 2011 and 2017, increasing land degradation, food insecurity, and vulnerability to flooding and drought. Somalia has seen rampant deforestation in recent decades. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FOA).
Planting trees and fruits at schools helps beautify the school compound and community around the schools. The newly planted trees will clean the air. They will clean the water runoff from the buildings with their roots. They not only enrich the students and residents’ lives; they enrich the earth that they now inhabit. As the gardens start to flower, they will attract bees, birds, and butterflies — all of which we need to pollinate food gardens in the schools.
Green Schools Programme (GSP): This is an environmental program that was designed by as a means of conserving our environment with particular emphasis to schools and the communities around them. The children will play an active role in planting the trees, and through a creative educational programme, we will teach them how to identify different trees, how to look after trees, and why trees are essential to a healthy living environment.
